Prosocial Organizational Capabilities in the Work-Integration Social Enterprise
This study investigates which organizational capabilities (OC) enable Work Integration Social Enterprises (WISEs) to pursue both social objectives and sustainable sources of revenue. It does so by focusing on the nature and use of OC that support both the social and the economic sustainability of this type of enterprise. The focus of the study is a consortium of 22 organizations that operate under the umbrella of Harmony, the fictional name of a …
The effect on economic development of creative class versus human capital
The creative class thesis considers the creative class, compared to human capital, as a better driver of regional economic development. We test this thesis for Germany. We measure creative class and human capital by occupation and education, respectively using classification codes from The Sample of Integrated Labor Market Biographies (SIAB), and proxy regional economic development by per capita income and employment. Our panel estimation results…
Governing cooperatives in the context of individual motives
Purpose This study aims to examine the relationships between the rules that a cooperative membership decides upon and members' motives for action. It considers individual self-interest in relation with motives that are consistent with the values of cooperation. Design/methodology/approach This paper comprises two parts. The first is theoretical and discusses cooperative governance's features in the context of individual motives. The second part i…
Lean HRM practices in work integration social enterprises
Lean production human resource management (HRM) practices, which are deemed to increase firms’ competitiveness through a skilled and empowered workforce, have arisen in the context of for‐profit companies. The same attention to lean HRM practices has not been paid in non‐profit organizations. In turn, few studies have looked into the adoption of for‐profit HRM practices within such organizations or focused on single practices and ordinary workers…
The ‘protective function’ of social enterprises
We study the problem of the renewal of workers’ intrinsic and pro-social motivations in democratic work settings, as found in Italian social enterprises, organizations in the social economy that deliver social and welfare services. Building upon institutional, system, and management theory we hypothesize that social enterprises value and protect pro-social motivations as crucial resources. Specifically, hypothesis-testing examines the effect of t…

The Extended Governance of Cooperative Firms
This work aims at providing a framework for the analysis of governance in networks of cooperative firms. It builds on four bodies of literature: cooperation, transaction costs, monopoly capitalism, production networks. The framework associates the specific principles that define the identity of cooperative organizations (self-help, member ownership, democratic control, financial participation, limited capital remuneration) alongside more general …

Creativity and socio‐economic development
Emphasising power in strategic choice, we consider people in actual and potential publics kindling their imagination and ideas in order to shape new directions in the economies in which they have an interest. This paper proposes ‘public creativity forums’, spaces defined by relations aimed at free communication and based upon shared values, including openness. Artistic activities are highlighted as a viaticum for people’s creativity, hence for th…
The Organization of Production and its Publics
The paper introduces mental proximity as an ideal-type criterion for assessing the organization of production, and positions it as a benchmark alongside markets and hierarchies in a three-dimensional space. Following a Deweyan approach, the criterion is focused on democratic deliberation espoused by necessary values: the rejection of controlling influences, positive freedom, inclusion on equal terms, informed participation, the desire to reach a …
Why, Where and With Whom Do You Link? The Nature and Motivations of Linkages Within and Outside an Italian Local System
Sacchetti S. Why, where and with whom do you link? The nature and motivations of linkages within and outside an Italian local system, Regional Studies. Building on the work of Richardson (1972) and on the need of firms to coordinate activities with others in search for related yet different competences, the paper proposes the results of a survey in the Italian Province of Reggio-Emilia (Emilia-Romagna, Italy). Concerns are related, in particular,…
