Recursive Prosody and the Prosodic Form of Compounds
This paper investigates the role recursive structures play in prosody. In current understanding, phonological phrasing is computed by a general syntax-prosody mapping algorithm. Here, we are interested in recursive structure that arises in response to morphosyntactic structure that needs to be mapped. We investigate the types of recursive structures found in prosody, specifically: For a prosodic category κ, besides the adjunctive type of recursio…
Pitch accent and tonal alignment in Kagoshima Japanese
While recent work has made it abundantly clear that the metrical foot is fundamental for any understanding of the accent pattern of Japanese and its dialects, other features of these pitch accent systems are directly linked to the constraints aligning tonal melodies with prosodic structure. This paper presents some results on the microvariation in the pitch accent systems of the dialects of Kagoshima Prefecture: the main Kagoshima City dialect, a…
Kattobase
On the basis of extensive research, Tanaka (2008) develops a thorough and insightful analysis of Japanese baseball chants of the form kat to ba se X - X - X "let it fly, hit a homerun, X-X-X!"where "X-X-X" is a rhythmic adaptation of a batter's name (e.g., Kakefu (掛布) > kaa-kee-fuu). The system is of surprising complexity since the kind of rhythmic adaptation a name receives depends in an intricate way on its length. Tanaka shows that a set of th…
Unaccentedness in Japanese
A characteristic, though not necessary, property of so-called pitch accent languages is the existence of unaccented words. Work on unaccentedness in Japanese has found a concentration of such words in very specific areas of the lexicon, defined in prosodic terms. While unaccentedness might be some kind of default, the prosodic rationale for the way it is distributed over the lexicon is far from clear. This article investigates the underlying stru…
The perfect prosodic word in Danish
The Danish stød , a kind of glottal prosody associated with certain syllables, as in bar ʔ n 'child' (cf. stødless barnlig 'childish'), has long been the target of intense phonological investigation. In this paper, we show that its analysis requires an understanding of the prosodic constituent structure of Danish, and of the essential role of the perfect prosodic word (coextensive with one foot). After motivating this notion on independent ground…
Prosodic subcategories in Japanese
Prosodic faithfulness and correspondence
Sympathy theory and German truncations
Phonological opacity, in the proposal of McCarthy 1997, arises through constraints on a new type of correspondence relation holding within the candidate set that Gen produces for a given input, i.e., a relation between co-candidates. A candidate may win because it is in sympathy with a particular failed co-candidate, one that is optimal with respect to a specific lower-ranking constraint. This paper presents independent evidence for Sympathy by a…
