Understanding Child Participation With 3–5 Year-Olds Across Professional Boundaries
Child health researchers are increasingly aware of children’s rights to express their views and to be heard in all matters affecting them, as expressed in article 12 in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This includes research, but it is unusual for young children to be involved as co-researchers in health research. Child-facing professionals and researchers sit on experience-based knowledge and practical skills, which could inform young …
Beyond Language Scores
As in many other countries, baseline data concerning the linguistic development of bilingual children in Sweden are lacking, and suitable methods for identifying developmental language disorder (DLD) in bilinguals are lacking as well. This study presents reference data from 108 typically developing (TD) Turkish/Swedish-speaking children aged 4;0-8;1, for a range of language tasks developed specifically for the assessment of bilinguals (LITMUS tes…
Non-Word Repetition and Vocabulary in Arabic-Swedish-Speaking 4-7-Year-Olds with and without Developmental Language Disorder
The Arabic-speaking community in Sweden is large and diverse, yet linguistic reference data are lacking for Arabic-Swedish-speaking children. This study presents reference data from 99 TD children aged 4;0-7;11 on receptive and expressive vocabulary in the minority and the majority language, as well as for three types of non-word repetition (NWR) tasks. Vocabulary scores were investigated in relation to age, language exposure, and socio-economic …
New Aspects of High-Mountain Palaeobiogeography
Recent recession of high-mountain glacier ice and perennial snow and ice patches has exposed megafossil and macrofossil tree remnants and peat, offering a new source of Holocene high alpine vegetation history in the Scandes. Radiocarbon dates of 90 tree megafossils from Swedish Lapland, 29 of which had not previously been published, range from 11 980 to 1950 cal yr BP. During the interval 9500 – 8500 cal yr BP, mountain birch (Betula pubescens ss…
Ancient Subalpine Clonal Spruces ( Picea abies )
This study addresses the long-standing issue of postglacial immigration of Picea abies (Norway spruce) into Scandinavia. The main methodological focus is on using megafossil tree remains (wood and cones) of spruce and other species retrieved from the treeline ecotone of the Swedish Scandes as a tool for vegetation reconstruction. The core data come from radiocarbon dating of megafossils preserved in the soil underneath clonal groups of Picea abie…
Differentials in overall and cause-specific mortality among infants born in and out of wedlock, Stockholm 1878–1925
This study investigates differentials in the decline of cause-specific infant mortality by marital status of the mother in Stockholm (1878–1925) and factors contributing to the explanation of these differentials using computerized records of individual entries from the Roteman Archives. Included in the analysis were 120,094 children less than 1 year of age who lived in Södermalm during this period. Cause-specific mortality rates were calculated f…
Equitable Child Health Interventions
Today, many of the 10 million childhood deaths each year are caused by diseases of poverty—diarrhea and pneumonia, for example, which were previously major causes of childhood death in many European countries. Specific analyses of the historical decline of child mortality may shed light on the potential equity impact of interventions to reduce child mortality. In our study of the impact of improved water and sanitation in Stockholm from 1878 to 1…
