Wandering Waste
The intention of this paper is to provide an exploration of how municipal solid waste systems generate or accelerate social inequality. Waste can produce inferiority not only among people, but also in landscapes. To achieve this aim, this research focuses on undocumented Afghan migrants in Tehran, Iran, who work as waste pickers. The archaeology of garbage project was conducted in 2017-18 to investigate the daily garbage of inhabitants of two districts of Tehran. Among the discarded materials, we recognized scattered evidence of prostitutes’ daily life. Finding such evidence gave us an alibi to work on the historical documents in order to trace the patterns of prostitution in nineteenth-century Tehran. This paper discusses the emergence of an archaeology of the contemporary era in a Middle Eastern country, Iran. Far from North America and Europe, where the subfield was introduced, appreciated and developed by academic archaeologists, this archaeology is now also becoming established in Iran in spite of academic reluctance and (indirect) political pressure. Exchange System Patterns in Bam, Southeastern Iran, after the Earthquake (December 2003)
Bam, a city located in southeastern Iran, was dramatically destroyed in a 6.8 (Mw) earthquake on December 26, 2003. As a result of the earthquake, more than half the city residents of this local trade center died and more than 80 percent of Bam market shops, retailers, and wholesalers suffered damage. Bam residents have lived for years in their city in south-eastern Iran, engaging in palm cultivation and trade. However, a dramatic change occurred on 26 December 2003 – a 6.8 MW earthquake. Five years after the earthquake, six houses were excavated to reconstruct the reaction of people to it and to explore their longer-term life paths.
