  • The Politics of Space and Relationality

    Open Access•Heidi Hudson, Diana Højlund Madsen•ARTICLE•Journal of Intervention and…•2024•Citada por: 3•Referências: 32

The article aims at remapping the relationship between Global North and Global South spatial politics in relation to the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, in the Ugandan post-conflict setting. Our analysis of 'localization' draws on understandings of space as a 'cartography of power' (Massey), relational approaches and three categories of space, namely representations of space, spatial practices and representational place-space. We argue th…

  • Temporality and the discursive dynamics of the Rwandan National Action Plans on Women, Peace and Security from 2009 and 2018

    Open Access•Diana Højlund Madsen, Heidi Hudson•ARTICLE•International Feminist Journal of…•2020•Citada por: 4•Referências: 11

The African Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda is supported by a well-developed architecture. However, the problem-solving language of the Continental Results Framework to monitor state implementation may impede critical gender discourses and practices. This article therefore examines the discursive repetitions and ruptures across Rwanda’s National Action Plans (NAPs) of 2009 and 2018, with specific attention to the dynamics of discursive rel…

  • Friction or flows? The translation of Resolution 1325 into practice in Rwanda

    Diana Højlund Madsen•ARTICLE•Conflict Security and Development•2019•Citada por: 1•Referências: 29

After almost 20 years with Resolution 1325 and the ‘women, peace and security’ agenda, the results achieved seem rather disappointing. This article analyses how the global gender norms laid out in Resolution 1325 have been translated into practice in a local post-conflict setting – Rwanda as a ‘best-case’ scenario on gender equality. Drawing on the theoretical literature on norm translation and the concepts of friction and flows, together with fi…

  • Gender, Power and Institutional Change - The Role of Formal and Informal Institutions in Promoting Women's Political Representation in Ghana

    Open Access•Diana Højlund Madsen•ARTICLE•Journal of Asian and African…•2019•Citada por: 11•Referências: 14

The article explores the role of formal and informal institutions in influencing the representation of women in the two major political parties in Ghana - NDC (National Democratic Congress) and NPP (New Patriotic Party) - as well as the small party CPP (Convention People's Party). Paradoxically, with its first president, Kwame Nkrumah (CPP), Ghana was one of the first countries in Africa to introduce a quota in 1959, reserving ten seats for women…

  • Gender Mainstreaming in the Danish Central Administration

    Open Access•Diana Højlund Madsen, Lise Rolandsen Agustín•ARTICLE•Kvinder Køn & Forskning•2018•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

Gender mainstreaming is the dominant strategy of the Danish national gender equality efforts. However, gender impact assessments have neither been sufficiently integrated in the policy-making processes of the Danish ministries nor in their organisational cultures, and their impact is minor. Drawing on feminist perspectives on institutional development the article focuses on two case studies – the Ministry of Employment and the Ministry of Transpo…

  • Teaching Gender in a Transnational Perspective - Challenges, Resistances and Strategies

    Open Access•Connie Carøe Christiansen, Diana Højlund Madsen•ARTICLE•Kvinder Køn & Forskning•2017•Referências: 1

This opening article argues for the need for adopting a transnational perspective in the teaching of gender in the classroom, an approach which has considerable resemblance with Mohanty's 'Feminist solidarity or comparative feminist studies model' of teaching. The article contributes to an on-going scholarly debate on the teaching of gender in higher education by specifying how the transnational feminist perspective could be adopted in practice, …

Teachi ng gender and diversity in higher education is an activity that almost all gender studies scholars are engaged in.In many courses taught today, gender and diversity is a frequently recurring theme whether the teaching activities are part of 'traditional' academic disciplines or part of specific women's and gender studies programmes.Yet, how to teach gender and its intersecting categories is rarely up for debate in academic journals. 1 This…

  • Mainstreaming from Beijing to Ghana – the role of the women's movement in Ghana

    Diana Højlund Madsen•ARTICLE•Gender & Development•2012•Citada por: 3•Referências: 2

Commitment to gender mainstreaming has been expressed worldwide as a result of the Beijing conference in 1995. The introduction of gender mainstreaming in the Beijing Platform for Action was regarded as a victory for gender ambassadors from the South, including the women's movements. However, an empirical study from Ghana on the processes of ‘translating’ gender mainstreaming into practice demonstrates that gender mainstreaming has not lived up t…
