Cause or consequence? Framing and keying mediation in a French secondary classroom
Linguistic diversity is a fundamental condition for bilingual teachers working in schools serving children who speak indigenous languages. In Mexico, these schools also tend to have multigrade classes with students of different ages and grade-levels. These conditions lead teachers to adopt and create practices and skills that take advantage of the linguistic and social heterogeneity of their groups. In this article, we analyze, in a one-room scho…

Mediating research and practice
In this article we discuss the dynamics of mediation between research, policy and practice by examining our year-long experience in developing materials with teachers of multigrade schools. Our focus is on understanding the dialectic between our knowledge constructed in the academic context of research on teaching and learning, on the one hand, and the knowledge that teachers gain through their own training and experience, on the other. Our persp…
From internal unravelling to transnational assembling

Gêneros do ensino
Appropriating Written French
In this article, I examine French language instruction in an elementary classroom serving primarily children of Afro‐French immigrants in Paris. I show that a prevalent French language ideology privileges written over oral expression and associates full mastery of written French with rational thought and full inclusion in the French polity. This ideology has over two centuries generated particular means for regimenting standard language forms thr…
Paradoxes in French‐Language Instruction
This essay on three recent books by outstanding scholars—La raison scolaire by Bernard Lahire, Histoire de l'enseignement du français du XVII e au XX e siècle by André Chervel, and L'école et la lecture obligatoire by Anne‐Marie Chartier—offers the opportunity to acquaint readers with French research on teaching written language and to show the value of historical research for understanding past and current developments. The discussion highlights…

Popular education and the logics of schooling
In this article, I compare two distinct uses of “Popular Education” that emerged in Tlaxcala in the wake of the Mexican Revolution. I examine archival and oral evidence to reconstruct the situated meanings and political rationales that led to the use of the term in each case, beyond their contrasting pedagogical content. In 1917, a revolutionary faction promoted “popular education” by providing elementary schools throughout regions under its cont…
Between community and state
This article analyses the changing role of the principal in Mexico, during a period, 1921–1934, in which the configurations sustaining and surrounding schooling were profoundly transformed. It compares the experience of three directores working in towns that differed in their expectations and relationship to state and federal government. In this context, the classic ‘dual personality’ of principals is played out in the tense relationship between …

What in the World Happens in Classrooms? Qualitative Classroom Research
This report synthesizes the discussion that took place in a Conference on Qualitative Classroom Research (‘What in the world happens in classrooms?’), organized by the authors and held in Oaxtepec, México in May 2002. The primary aim was to visualize possible interconnections among the various disciplines represented by the 35 scholars who were present. We faced the initial difficulty of defining what ‘classrooms' are, have been, or will become. …
Learning for Life or Learning from Books
This article furthers our understanding of the uses of textbooks within the complex social history of school cultures. It focuses on rural schools in an indigenous region of central Mexico, before and after the Mexican revolution (1910‐1921). Two contextual factors are highlighted. First, the gradual displacement of the native language by the dominant Spanish used in schools. Secondly, the pedagogical discourses that discouraged the use of textbo…

Teaching Genres
This article accentuates the cultural/historical nature of teaching. Drawing on Bakhtin's theory of speech genres, it approaches classroom discourse as a composite genre that reflects the history of teaching in each locality. The analysis of a lesson observed in a rural school in Mexico shows how genres drawn from a variety of sources convey different sorts of knowledge as they are woven into ongoing classroom conversation

Recovering History in the Study of Schooling
Although the search for more effective schooling is frequently invoked in Vygotskian research, schools themselves are rarely studied from a cultural-historical perspective. By examining three intersecting planes – the longue durée , relative continuity, and everyday co-construction – we may be able to integrate both the historicity and cultural diversity of school environments, and the profound subjectivity of school experience. All three dimensi…
