Prevalence and the associated factors of hepatitis B and hepatitis C viral infections among HIV-positive individuals in same-day antiretroviral therapy initiation program in Bangkok, Thailand
Around 5-10% of newly diagnosed PWH in Bangkok had hepatitis B viral infection after 25 years of universal vaccination. Anti-HCV positivity was found in 4-5% of PWH who were MSM and TGW. As World Health Organization and Thailand national guidelines already support routine screening of hepatitis B and C viral infections in PWH and populations at increased risk of HIV including MSM and TGW, healthcare providers should reinforce this strategy and pr…
Perspectives of Transgender Women Toward Study Recruitment and Retention
Antiretroviral-naïve HIV-infected patients had lower bone formation markers than HIV-uninfected adults
There are limited studies regarding bone health among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Asia. We compared bone mineral density (BMD), serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) status and bone turnover markers (serum procollagen type1 N-terminal propeptide (P1NP), osteocalcin (OC) and C-terminal cross-linking telopeptide of type1 collagen) among 302 antiretroviral therapy (ART) naive PLHIV compared to 269 HIV-uninfected controls from Thailand. People ag…
Implementation and impact of a technology-based HIV risk-reduction intervention among Thai men who have sex with men using “Vialogues”
We conducted a randomized control trial to evaluate the impact of a novel technology-based intervention on HIV risks and condom use behaviors among Thai men who have sex with men (MSM). Between April 2016 and August 2017, participants aged 18 years and above, and having engaged in unprotected sex in past six months were randomly assigned to control and intervention arm, and received HIV testing at baseline, month 6 and 12. Intervention arm partic…
Changes in risk behaviors among Thai men who have sex with men and transgender women enrolled in the test and treat cohort
The test-and-treat approach has the potential to reduce high-risk sexual behaviors by linking high-risk individuals to health education, although this has not been proven yet. We used longitudinal data from the Test and Treat Demonstration Project among Thai men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) who were not known to be HIV-positive to analyze changes in risk behaviors during the 24-month study period categorized by three gr…
Correlates of nonadherence to key population-led HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis services among Thai men who have sex with men and transgender women
Urgent, innovative interventions for early PrEP adherence support among vulnerable sub-populations such as younger users, TGW, and new clients are needed to maximize prevention strategy in Thailand
A qualitative study of Thai HIV-positive young men who have sex with men and transgender women demonstrates the need for eHealth interventions to optimize the HIV care continuum
In Thailand, young men who have sex with men (YMSM) and transgender women (TG) are disproportionately affected by HIV and have suboptimal care continuum outcomes. Although Thai YMSM and young TG are early adopters of emerging technologies and have high Internet and technology access and utilization, the potential of technology has not been harnessed to optimize the HIV treatment cascade. We interviewed 18 behaviorally HIV-infected YMSM and young …
Psychosocial factors influencing preferences for food and nutritional supplements among people living with HIV in Bangkok, Thailand
Low uptake of HIV testing and no HIV positivity in stable serodiscordant heterosexual partners of long-term treated HIV-infected Thais
The objective of this study was to characterize HIV-serodiscordant heterosexual couples and to evaluate acceptance for HIV testing and HIV prevalence in nonindex partners. We conducted a cross-sectional study with quantitative and qualitative components. Two cohorts of 1767 HIV-positive people were screened to identify heterosexual HIV-serodiscordant couples. HIV-positive partners (index) were administered a questionnaire; CD4, viral load (VL), a…
Motivational Interviewing Targeting Risky Sex in HIV-Positive Young Thai Men Who Have Sex with Men
Attitudes toward, and interest in, the test-and-treat strategy for HIV prevention among Thai men who have sex with men
This study assessed the attitudes toward, and interest in, the test-and-treat strategy, comprising regular HIV testing and immediate antiretroviral treatment (ART) among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Bangkok, Thailand. A total of 363 participants completed the questionnaires before and after learning about their HIV status. Previous HIV testing reported by 69.8% and 34.7% tested at least annually. Before pretest counseling, 83.2% expressed i…
Motivational Interviewing Targeting Risk Behaviors for Youth Living with HIV in Thailand
Perceived dental needs and attitudes toward dental treatments in HIV-infected Thais
Despite the advancement in highly active antiretroviral therapy and improved health status of HIV-infected individuals, dental problems are still affecting their life and well-beings. We aimed to establish the prevalence of oral and dental complaints among HIV-infected patients, the prevalence of delayed access to dental service, and factors related with delayed access to dental service. A cross-sectional study using self-report questionnaire com…

Transtheoretical model and risky sexual behaviour in HIV + youth in Thailand
The purpose of the study was to determine the applicability of the Transtheoretical Model for predicting unprotected intercourse in HIV+ Thai youth. Questionnaires and interviews about sexual behaviour, readiness to change, self-efficacy, substance use, emotional distress and social support were obtained from 70 HIV+ Thai youth (ages 17 to 25). Path analysis suggested the model was an excellent fit with the data. Readiness to change but not self-…
Preference for CD4-guided versus continuous HARRT in Thailand
Nineteen patients who completed a 27-month CD4-guided structured treatment interruption (STI) trial that showed similar efficacy in STI and continuous arms were asked to choose CD4-guided versus continuous HAART after the study ended. Six chose STI and 13 chose continuous HAART. Reasons for not choosing STIs were fear of developing HIV-related illnesses (38%), fear of CD4 drop (30.8%), fear of viral load increase (7.7%) and ease (7.7%). Those who…
Sexual Behavior and Risk Factors for HIV Infection Among Homosexual and Bisexual Men in Thailand
Inconsistent Condom Use with Steady and Casual Partners and Associated Factors among Sexually-Active Men who Have Sex with Men in Bangkok, Thailand
Adaptation of Venue-Day-Time Sampling in Southeast Asia to Access Men Who Have Sex with Men for HIV Assessment in Bangkok
This article describes adaptation and implementation of venue-day-time (VDT) sampling to enroll Thai men who have sex with men (MSM) through bars, saunas, and parks in Bangkok for the first community-based assessment of HIV prevalence and risk behavior. VDT sampling had four phases: (1) identification and geographic mapping of venues, (2) enumerating foot traffic at a subset of venues, (3) determination of eligibility and willingness to participa…

Sexual risk behaviour reduction associated with voluntary HIV counselling and testing in HIV infected patients in Thailand
Sexual risk behaviour, measured by anonymously self-reported sexual activity, number of sexual partners, and condom use rates, was studied in age- and gender-matched HIV-1 positive consecutive patients from the Thai Red Cross Immune Clinic (IC) (study group, questioned after voluntary HIV counselling and testing) and the Thai Red Cross Anonymous Clinic (AC) (control group, questioned before voluntary HIV counselling and testing) in Bangkok, Thail…
