  • Quality Assessment of Privately Managed Public Space

    Open Access•Miks Braslins, T Tisenkopfs•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2026•Referências: 3

This exploratory study addresses the problem of limited research on quality assessments of newly emerging multi-use market formats that function as social hubs and their management as privately managed public spaces. Using Āgenskalns Market, a revitalised multi-use market hall in Riga, as a case study, the authors apply an assessment framework based on Yuri Impens’ study on covered food halls, incorporating quality criteria from Vikas Mehta’s Pub…

    Open Access•Dionisio Ortiz-Miranda, Olga M Moreno‐pérez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2022•Citada por: 2•Referências: 2

Outcomes of 13 participatory foresight workshops are compared. • Small farms' and businesses' contribution to food security is important in three of the four considered scenarios. • Concerns on small farms and food businesses relate to the broader rural setting. • Weak collective action will hamper the adaptive capacity of small farms

  • Whose ethics and for whom? Dealing with ethical disputes in agri-food governance

    Open Access•T Tisenkopfs, E Kilis et al.•ARTICLE•Agriculture and Human Values•2019•Citada por: 2•Referências: 4

In contemporary societies there is a continuous process of creation and destruction of ethics. Shared norms are fuzzy, as actors tend to share core principles but interpret them differently. In this paper we analyse three cases of ethical dispute in the agri-food sector by employing the distinction between matters of fact and matters of concern proposed by Bruno Latour. We further suggest that ethics in the agri-food industry should be considered…

  • Typology and distribution of small farms in Europe

    Open Access•Nuno Guiomar, Sérgio Godinho et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2018•Citada por: 12•Referências: 104

The contribution of small farms to local food supply, food security and food sovereignty is widely acknowledged at a global level. In the particular case of Europe, they often are seen as an alternative to large and specialised farms. Assessing the real role of small farms has been limited by a lack of information, as small farms are frequently omitted from agricultural censuses and national statistics. It is also well acknowledged that small far…

  • Bricolage for Self-Sufficiency

    Open Access•M Grivins, Daniel Keech et al.•ARTICLE•Sociologia Ruralis•2017•Citada por: 4•Referências: 31

In this article the bricolage concept is applied to compare the organisational dynamics of two alternative food networks (AFNs) in Riga and Bristol respectively. It is argued that bricolage is a useful concept to understand the dynamics of AFNs. The concept 'bricolage' refers to the free use of any materials at hand. Bricoleurs accept that these materials might not be ideal, but nevertheless use them as long as they offer characteristics that hel…

This article traces changes in household food consumption patterns comparing the late Soviet period and the present day based on household interviews and interpretive analysis. We reconstruct and visualize four foodscapes from households of varying socioeconomic contexts, based on their memories of food consumption prior to the breakup of the Soviet Union and their lived experiences of food consumption today. The article looks at the post-socialist countryside as a created field constructed through the discourses and practices of different actors. Despite the fact that small-scale holdings are the major outcome of agricultural reform, and subsistence oriented farmers constitute the bulk of the rural population, there are a variety of other actors in the new Latvian countryside. Their interests are reflected in three competing approaches to rural devel…
