EFL Pronunciation Instruction in Spanish Primary Schools
This article reports on the first qualitative phase of an exploratory sequential mixed method (ESMM) research design focusing on EFL pronunciation instruction in Spanish primary schools. Firstly, it presents an analysis of the National Curriculum in light of recent policy changes and adaptations across seventeen Autonomous Communities (AACC) to assess coherence and the scaffolding of contents. A functional model for the tag question paradigm
While research has mostly focused on the pragmatics of variable tag questions, fewer studies have explored invariable tags, either for their own sake or in contrast with other tag types within and across languages. It will be argued that invariable tag questions are as much part of the tag question system as variable tag questions, and that a unified functional model needs to consider both types in order to compare function-to-form mappings and r…

The pragmatics and prosody of variable tag questions in English
Lexical cohesion revisited. A combined corpus and systemic-functional analysis
In this article I argue for a refinement of the classic SFL approach to lexical cohesion. First, a literature overview is provided in which key principles and related categories are examined. Lexical cohesion in multiparty conversations
Evaluating lexical cohesion in telephone conversations
Ever since the publication of Halliday and Hasan (1976), cohesion analysis has received much attention in several branches of linguistics. Lexical cohesion in particular has been shown to contribute to the coherence of discourse in a number of ways (Ferstl and von Cramon, 2001; Hellman, 1995; Hoey, 1991b; Sanders and Pander Maat, 2006), and specific patterns of lexical cohesion have emerged as relevant for the description of different registers a…

On subject It-extrapositions
This paper reports some results from a bigger project analysing the relevance of Theme, i.e. clause initial position, in Present-day English (PresE). Our aim is to explore the formal features, the communicative properties and the frequencies of one thematic device, It-extrapositions of the type It is strange that the duke gave my aunt that teapot, in the Lancaster Spoken English Corpus (henceforth LSEC). 105 tokens of these constructions were stu…
