Application of a Youth-Adult Partnership Model to Facilitate Skill Development Among Military-Connected Youth
Background: Out-of-school time programs have proven to be effective models for promoting positive youth development. Because military-connected youth face unique stressors, programs that intentionally address the specific needs of military-connected youth may offer additional opportunities for positive outcomes. Boys and Girls Clubs of America partners with the U.S. Armed Forces to provide programs, such as the Military Teen Ambassadors (MTA) pro…
Supporting military-connected teens to thrive
For teens growing up in military-connected families, challenges relating to relocation, parental deployment, and reintegration add layers of stress to an already complex time of life. Out-ofschool time programs provide military-connected teens opportunities to utilize existing strengths, develop new skills, and build support networks, as exemplified in the Military Teen Ambassador (MTA) program -a positive youth development program developed by t…

Cultivating knowledge of resiliency and reintegration among military youth through a national youth leadership program
Youth in military families are frequently challenged by the adjustment demands associated with the deployment and reintegration of a parent. A positive youth development approach was undertaken by the Boys and Girls Clubs of America to develop and implement a Military Teen Ambassadors (MTA) training for youth in military families that would facilitate knowledge of resiliency and reintegration and foster leadership skills to build assets for thems…

Predictors of family participation in a multiple family group intervention for aggressive middle school students
The authors examine predictors of family participation in the G.R.E.A.T. Families Program of the Multisite Violence Prevention Project (MVPP), a four‐site collaboration examining student, teacher, and family interventions for middle school students. Teachers recruited two cohorts of sixth grade students, recognized as being aggressive and influential with their peers, and their families into a voluntary, 15‐session weekly program. Among the 643 f…
A multiple family group intervention for first‐time juvenile offenders
This study evaluated a multiple‐family group‐intervention program (MFGI) for first‐time juvenile offenders. The recidivism rate for subjects who completed the MFGI (the Family Solutions Program) was compared to recidivism rates of two other groups of first‐time juvenile offenders. Using logistic regression analysis predicting who will recidivate, juvenile first offenders who were placed on probation (N = 95) were 9.3 times more likely to re‐offen…
Predictors of Marital Adjustment During the First Two Years
Marital difficulties for many couples occur early in marriage. Approximately 21% of marriages end within the first two years and 40% end by the fourth year. The consequences for individuals and their families affect emotional well-being, financial stability, and child development. A sample of 93 couples participated in a study in which data were collected on marriage at five intervals between one month and two years. During the first months, age,…
Congruence, Desire for Change, and Adjustment During the First Year of Marriage
This longitudinal study was an examination of the marital relationship during its first year to discover what relations exist between congruence on initial values and role expectations, and marital adjustment and the desire for spousal change. It was found that congruence was positively related to marital adjustment and negatively related to the desire for spousal change, although this relation was statistically significant only at one month of m…

Measuring Morale
This research examined how a multidimensional measure of well-being was used in studies of successful aging. Probability methods yielded a sample of 171 people who were at least 65 years of age. The Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale (revised) was contrasted in summary and factor form with several aspects of perceived health. It had been anticipated that the magnitude of association between perceived health, a summared morale score, and t…
Personal and Family Adjustment in Later Life
Most prior research on relationships of older parents and adult children, as well as their impact on the lives of the elderly, has examined quantitative variables such as frequency of interaction or residential proximity. The primary purpose of this study was to develop and test a theoretical model of qualitative dimensions in these relationships. Furthermore, the impact of these dimensions on the personal and family adjustment of the aged member…
Social Network Interaction Among Older Adults
In-depth interviews were conducted with older adults to ascertain the importance of social relations for life satisfaction. Probability sampling techniques yielded 74 respondents. The findings indicate that older adults are generally not isolatedfrom others, and that life satisfaction is not necessarily enhanced by interpersonal interaction. Two myths of aging, those concerning alienation and enrichment are thereby not supported
