The feasibility of a psychometric measure for the experiences of funerals
To test the feasibility and reliability and validity of the Experiences of Funerals measure (EIFFEL) measure in a community population. Using a non-experimental psychometric design, 194 participants completed EIFFEL, which was analysed using item completion rates, exploratory and confirmatory factory analyses and corroborated with free-text comments. EIFFEL shows good acceptability although internal consistency was low (Cronbach’s alpha of 0.41,N…
“Throwing shows against the wall and hoping for the best”: NBC, quality, and the Emmy race for Outstanding Drama Series in the 2010s
In 1999, The Sopranos (HBO, 1999–2007) was the first-ever nominee from premium or basic cable in the Primetime Emmys’ Outstanding Drama Series category, a slate annually dominated by broadcast dramas; by 2012, the broadcast networks had been completely omitted from the Emmy category’s nominations, ceded to the prestige cable (and later, streaming) dramas that had been influenced by HBO and The Sopranos. This article uses this turn to consider the…
Back Onside protocol: A physical activity intervention to improve health outcomes in people who are unemployed or at risk of unemployment
Given the effects of physical activity on people's mental and physical health, a better understanding is needed of how physical activity interventions may impact the health of people who are unemployed or at risk of unemployment. This has added urgency in the context of rising rates of poverty-related unemployment in the UK in 2022. The current paper details the protocol used in the evaluation of the Back Onside Programme; a community-based progr…

Dying 2 Talk: Generating a More Compassion Community for Young People
People in the Global North often have a problem talking about — and processing — the inevitability of death. This can be because death and care of the dying has been professionalised, with encounters of death within our families and communities no longer being ‘normal and routine’ (Kellehear 2005). Young people are particularly excluded from these conversations, with implications for future mental health and wellbeing (Ainsley-Green 2017). Workin…

Community development approaches refer to interventions, frameworks and programmes which work with communities to help them to identify their collective needs and challenges, and mobilises them to utilise available assets to generate lon…
Associations of observer’s gender, Body Mass Index and internalization of societal beauty ideals to visual body processing
We examined whether visual processing mechanisms of the body of conspecifics are different in women and men and whether these rely on westernised socio-cultural ideals and body image concerns. Twenty-four women and 24 men performed a visual discrimination task of upright or inverted images of female or male bodies and faces (Experiment 1) and objects (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, both groups of women and men showed comparable abilities in the …
Netflix Originals: The Evolution of True Crime Television
Netflix has emerged at the forefront of a modern craze: the serialized true crime docuseries, a phenomenon emblematized by the platform’s hit series Making a Murderer (2015–2018). This article contextualizes the true crime docuseries trend within the tradition of true crime television, a long-popular genre frequently dismissed as sensationalism. The article traces the genre’s ideology and format to situate the true crime docuseries not as an elev…
