Services Trade Liberalisation in RCEP
The liberalisation of services has been central to the RCEP process, reflecting the interests of key stakeholders involved in the negotiations. The outcome of RCEP can be viewed as a political-economic balance that harmonises the diverse interests of its member countries. However, the agreement is sometimes criticised for being somewhat of a ‘talking shop’, offering few tangible steps beyond what has already been established in existing agreement…
Rural Transformation, GVCs and the Rise of the Services Economy
The rise of global agricultural value chains presents both opportunities and challenges for rural transformation and economic development. In this regard, we propose that the expansion of the service sector in developing countries significantly influences the development of agricultural value chain, promoting wealth creation. We posit that when global value chains in agriculture are used to interpret rural transformation, the crucial function of …

Services trade in the Asean region and participation in GVCs
This paper documents the importance of trade in services for global value chain participation in the ASEAN region. Using newly created data on GVCs as well as a new database on the services trade restrictiveness index to connect international trade policies in services to participation in GVCs, we show that restrictions on trade in services are detrimental for backward participation in GVCs and that such restrictions are harmful to ASEAN members …
The traditional Chinese philosophies in inter-cultural leadership

However, little attention has been paid to such Chinese expatriate managers and their leadership challenges in an inter-cultural context, especially across a large cultural distance. To fill the gap in the literature concerning the leadership challenges for expatriate managers in an inter-cultural context, the purpose o…
Unravelling the complex motivations behind China's outward FDI
This study empirically investigates the dynamics of motivations behind China's outward foreign direct investment (FDI). Based on a dataset of 75 host countries of China's outward FDI, we test the relative importance of outward FDI motives in different time periods. We account for endogeneity issues due to unobserved host country-specific factors and reverse causality using a dynamic panel estimation approach. We find that over time increasing for…
Reciprocity and incentive pay in the workplace
Civil Conflict, Federalism and Strategic Delegation of Leadership
This article analyzes negative externalities that policymakers in one region or group may impose upon the citizens of neighboring regions or groups. These externalities may be material, but they may also be psychological (in the form of envy). The latter form of externality may arise from the production of `conspicuous' public goods. As a result, decentralized provision of conspicuous public goods may be too high. Potentially, a centralized legis…
Why does centralisation fail to internalise policy externalities
