An Exploration of the Relationship between Performance, Decision Making, and Structure
A management simulation exercise plus a field study were used to analyze the relationship between performance, decision-making processes, and emergent organizational structure. It was found that lower performing organizations relied more on “inspired” decisions, took less time for the process, and were more formally structured. However, the increase in structure and lowered satisfaction tended to follow performance changes rather than cause them
Locus of Control and Job Dissatisfaction
To replicate an earlier study, 274 hospital employees, 86% of the staff, were surveyed to determine whether perceived job satisfaction was related to an individual's locus of control. While high scoring (external) employees were relatively less satisfied than were the low scoring (internal) ones, their attitudes toward the hospital, their working conditions, and their manager were significantly less positive. It was concluded that the external gr…
Psychology of the Scientist
Using peer nominations, 65 physical scientists were classified as either creative and productive, productive but not creative, or non-creative and non-productive. Each scientist was then interviewed to determine his information-receiving behaviors and attitudes. Results indicate that creative scientists are distinguished from other scientists in their use of people as sources of information and that they receive information from a wider field' of…
An Analysis of the Relationship Between Information Sources and Creativity in Scientists and Engineers
The literature is replete with analyses of creativity as related to personality traits and organizational constraints. Based on Mednick's (1962) associationist position, it was felt that information use patterns play a key role in an individual's process of creativity. In order to test this idea, 29 academic and 36 industrial physical scientists and engineers were categorized as either creative and productive; productive, but not creative; or non…
