Profiles of Self-Regulated Learning Skills in Gifted Students
Despite increased recognition of gifted students’ diverse cognitive and motivational characteristics, research has overlooked the assessment of intragroup differences. This study aimed to identify profiles of self-regulatory learning skills among gifted students, to identify individual and contextual variables associated with profiles, and to examine the association between profiles and indicators of achievement and learning engagement in these l…
A robust modeling framework to investigate transmissible diseases
Introduction: In the face of the challenges posed by pandemics like COVID-19, the need for accurate mathematical models and methods to predict the impact of outbreaks on public health in real-time is paramount. This research aims to develop a robust, adaptable, and general framework for investigating the dynamics of any transmissible disease. The primary objective of this work is to achieve robust parameter optimization for a general modeling fra…
Exploring the effects of positive imagined contact with gay men and lesbians on sexual prejudice among young heterosexuals
Reciprocal links between student disengagement and teacher–student relationships
BACKGROUND: High-quality teacher-student relationships are linked to engagement, yet disengaged students may view the relationship less positively, suggesting a potential reciprocal cycle between disengagement and teacher-student relationship quality. This bidirectional process has been theorized but remains underexplored at the within-person level over time. AIM: To examine within-year within-person dynamics in student disengagement and its reci…
A general modeling framework for quantitative tracking, accurate prediction of ICU, and assessing vaccination for Covid-19 in Chile
Background: One of the main lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic is that we must prepare to face another pandemic like it. Consequently, this article aims to develop a general framework consisting of epidemiological modeling and a practical identifiability approach to assess combined vaccination and non-pharmaceutical intervention (NPI) strategies for the dynamics of any transmissible disease. Materials and methods: Epidemiological modeling of the pr…
The impact of time of entrance to center-based care on children’s general, language, and behavioral development
There are contrasting results of the association between center-based care attendance and child development, mainly related to how the time of entry and permanence in the program relates to developmental outcomes. Using latent class analysis in a nationally representative sample of Chilean children between 6 and 35 months old ( n = 3,992), and controlling for the child’s age, maternal education, mother’s marital status, and household income, we i…
Mental Health and Life Satisfaction on Chilean Gay Men and Lesbian Women
The Minority Stress Model has proposed that connectedness to a specific minority community may be a protective factor for stigmatized groups. This study evaluated the mediational role of connectedness with the gay men's and lesbian women's community on the relationship between two minority stressors (internalized homophobia and perceived sexual stigma) with anxiety-depressive symptomatology and life satisfaction. The sample consisted of 467 Chile…
Upper secondary students’ situational interest in physics learning in Finland and Chile
This study examines how classroom activities, student gender and student personal interest in science studies and careers predict situational interest in physics learning. Teaching modules were designed based on the secondary physics curricula in Finland (Helsinki) and Chile (Santiago and Viña del Mar) emphasising students engagement in scientific practices. The study was implemented in four classrooms in both countries. Data on situational inter…
Patterns of situational engagement and task values in science lessons
Situational engagement is a key element in promoting students’ maintained interest and focused attention in learning. Most research on students engagement has been variable-centered, and only few studies have examined situational patterns of student engagement. The present study used person-oriented approach (e.g., latent profile analysis with Mplus multigroup comparison and 3-step procedure) to examine patterns of students’ situational engagemen…
Momentary task‐values and expectations predict engagement in science among Finnish and Chilean secondary school students
While expectancy‐value‐cost theory predicts that students' task values play an important part in academic engagement, these associations have rarely been tested in science education and are even less studied in authentic classroom situations. The present study examined to what extent momentary task‐values, expectations and costs are associated with students' momentary academic engagement in science classes. Momentary academic engagement was opera…
Validation of the Factorial Structure of Social Capital in Youth Involved in Prosocial and Political Organizations
Social capital (SC) has been described as the 'glue' that facilitates close social relationships among individuals, groups, and communities. However, few studies have empirically tested the structure of this concept. We report two studies that advance and test a model of SC in youth involved in social organizations. A theory-guided multidimensional representation of SC comprising six dimensions-social trust, interpersonal trust, participation pro…
Patterns of Civic and Political Commitment in Early Adolescence
Interest in understanding how civic engagement emerges has been fueled by worries about the decline of youth participation in conventional political activities. Acknowledging the developmental nature of civic engagement, this study analyzes involvement in civic activities during early adolescence. We used latent class analysis to identify patterns of participation in a representative sample of Chilean adolescents. A four-class model was highlight…
Quality of Participation in Youth Organizations
Through a cross-sectional design, this study examines whether practices of active participation (AP; that is, opportunities for decision making and leadership) and quality of relationships (QR) established between members of youth organizations (i.e., affective and instrumental support) relate to dimensions of youth's identity (i.e., personal purpose, personal meaning) and sense of sociopolitical control (i.e., leadership, political efficacy). Pa…
Chilean Adolescents' and Parents' Views on Autonomy Development
This study aims to understand Chilean parents' and adolescents' conceptions of autonomy and whether they hold different expectations for autonomous behaviors by generation and socioeconomic level. A qualitative approach to data collection was used through separate focus groups of parents and adolescents from different socioeconomic condition. Substantial similarities in parents' and adolescents' conceptions of autonomy were found. Both generation…
Methods for Handling Missing Data
The field of missing data analysis has evolved quickly; outdated strategies have been replaced by missing data procedures that make use of partial data to provide unbiased and efficient parameter estimates. Here, we describe an eight-step process for performing basic missing data procedures (single and multiple imputation) using NORM (Version 2.03; Schafer, 1997) and SAS (Version 9.2; SAS, 2011a). We make use of the automation utility, MIAutomate…
Young Chileans' Views of Citizenship
Through a qualitative methodology, this study examines meanings attached to citizenship, barriers for citizenship, motivations for civic engagement, and aspirations as citizens in a sample (n = 71) of Chilean youth that grew up during the transition to democracy. The meanings youth attached to citizenship include membership, entitlement to rights and responsibilities, active participation, being informed, and voting. Participants perceived that p…
Youth civic development
The authors use examples of youth civic engagement from Chile, South Africa, Central/Eastern Europe, and the United States--and also emphasize diversities among youth from different subgroups within countries--to illustrate common elements of the civic domain of youth development. These include the primacy of collective activity for forming political identities and ideas and the greater heterogeneity of civic compared to other discretionary activ…
Individual and Issue‐Specific Differences in Parental Knowledge and Adolescent Disclosure in Chile, the Philippines, and the United States
Perceived parental knowledge and adolescents' disclosure to parents were predicted from parental warmth and monitoring and adolescents' disclosure, agreement, and beliefs about obligation to obey and parental legitimacy ( N =698 Chilean, Filipino, and U.S. 13–20‐year‐olds). The correlates of knowledge are similar in all three countries, but the relative strength of the correlations differs. Global agreement was associated with greater knowledge. …
Ethnic Awareness, Prejudice, and Civic Commitments in Four Ethnic Groups of American Adolescents
School and community climates and civic commitments
The developmental correlates of diffuse support for the polity and civic commitments were explored in a survey of 1,052 students (mean age 14.96 years) from African American, Arab American, European American, and Latino American backgrounds. Results of structural equation modeling revealed that regardless of their age, gender, or ethnic background, youth were more likely to believe that America was a just society and to commit to democratic goals…
Planned missing data designs in psychological research.
The authors describe 2 efficiency (planned missing data) designs for measurement: the 3-form design and the 2-method measurement design. The 3-form design, a kind of matrix sampling, allows researchers to leverage limited resources to collect data for 33% more survey questions than can be answered by any 1 respondent. Power tables for estimating correlation effects illustrate the benefit of this design. The 2-method measurement design involves a …
Predictors of Adolescents’ Disclosure to Parents and Perceived Parental Knowledge
Rules, legitimacy of parental authority, and obligation to obey in Chile, the Philippines, and the United States
With age, Chilean, Filipino, and U.S. youth come to believe that fewer issues are legitimately within the control of parents and that they are less obliged to obey parental rules. These beliefs vary across domains and countries, providing insight into parent-adolescent conflict and the development of autonomy
Methods for Handling Missing Data
This chapter describes a general approach to handling missing data in psychological research. It provides a theoretical background in readable, nontechnical fashion. Our overall goal was to give practical, usable advice, rather than to give a detailed statistical treatment of issues surrounding analysis of incomplete data. We give an overview of the older, unacceptable methods for handling incomplete data, so that readers will know what approache…
