Geriatric community health workers’ views about aging, work, and retirement
Seasoned geriatric community health workers offered valuable data that will inform educators and community health workers working with older persons. Influence of income, being partnered/married, resilience, and discrimination on mental health distress for midlife and older gay men
Predictors of mental health distress were examined in 316 older gay men in a cross-sectional analysis using resilience and minority stress theories. Stigma, discrimination, internalized homophobia, health locus of control, social supports, income, and age cohort were included in a stepwise regression that explained 46% of variance. Two waves of a Social Security Beneficiary survey were analyzed to consider differences in the retirement resources of women and men based on marital status and race/ethnicity. A Dual Process Model of Bereavement, which considers the impact of loss- and restoration-oriented variables on widowers' levels of well-being, is tested on 200 widowed men during the second year of bereavement. A longitudinal research design was used to examine the relationship between retirement and mental health among 222 retirees (114 men and 108 women) at three different time periods: (I) at preretirement; (2) six months; and (3) one year later.
