The Direct Effect of Taxes and Transfers on Changes in the U.S. Income Distribution, 1967–2015
Scholars have increasingly drawn attention to rising levels of income inequality in the United States. However, prior studies have provided an incomplete account of how changes to specific transfer programs have contributed to changes in income growth across the distribution. Our study decomposes the direct effects of tax and transfer programs on changes in the household income distribution from 1967 to 2015. We show that despite a rising Gini co…
Abandoning Medical Authority
Despite authority's centrality to the medical profession, providers routinely forgo their medical authority during clinical encounters. Research focuses on patients challenging medical authority but indicates these confrontations are uncommon and providers seldom relinquish their authority in response. Using rare data of 75 audio recordings of adolescent vaccine discussions during clinical encounters and interviews with and observations of medica…

‘Wyne Confortative’
This chapter examines the history of the drinking of wine in Scotland as an exercise in using entries in the Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue (DOST). Wine is not native to Scotland and so had to be imported as an object of trade. It was expensive, and remained as a drink of the better off until recent times. DOST deals with Scots up to the year 1700. However, the chapter continues the story up to the end of the eighteenth century in order …

Phases of Ethnology in Britain. With Special Reference to Scotland
The historiography of a subject is part of that subject; developmental phases tie in with developments in related subjects, and can react sensitively with periods of historical change. This paper considers the growth of the subject of ethnology in Britain in three main phases: l. its late 18th-early 19th century beginnings, growing out of antiquarian learning. 2. a 20th century phase, in which a regional or national sense of identity (especially …

Swedish Ethnology
A modest but fascinating book divided into three parts. The first is an essay by L. Olsson on child labour in Swedish industry. He points out that this was not a result of industrialization. In the farming sector, for example, it has always been regarded as normalfor children to work, as well as in trades and manufactures; a stocking factory in Malmö got the right in 1718, for example, to use the town's orphanage children. ‘Non-productive‘ work w…

European Ethnology
Ethnological studies are concerned not only with regions, but also with comparisons between regions. Comparative research can often be hindered by linguistic problems, and it is therefore a matter of pleasure to see that the countries in central and eastern Europe are now publishing a good deal of relevant material in an accessible language. An increasing number of books from Scandinavia is also being published in English.A good example is the jo…
Sowensin Scotland
Oatmeal in its various forms was formerly one of the basic elements in the diet of Scotland. It has been and is still used as porridge, made by boiling meal and water togethe, as brose, made by pouring boiling water into a bowl of meal and stirring, and as oatcakes which, though not so much baked at home nowadays, are coming into increasing prominenee as factory produce. There is also a by-product, generally called Sowens in Lowland Scots, in Gael…

Alternating Stone and Turf-An Obsolete Building Practice
It often happens even in these days of rapid change, that an object, custom, building feature, dialect term, and so on, about which information has been first gleaned from printed sources, may still be found in the course of field investigations. Unfortunately, the contrary can also be true, and one example of a feature of vernacular architecture that appears to have gone beyond recall is the technique of building the walls of houses in alternate…

The Scope of Regional Ethnology
Introductory Note: This paper is an adaptation of a lecture under the same title delivered at the Symposium on Regional Ethnology organized by the Welsh Folk Museum on 31 October-3 November 1972. The Symposium was probably the first serious attempt in these islands to try to reach an outline definition of regional ethnology, and to seek improved co-ordination between the various methods of approach to this developing subject. Various contributors…

Peat in Fetlar
The, island of Fetlar is one of the North Isles of Shetland, lying East of island of Yell, with Hascosay in the sound between. In size it measures roughly six miles by four, and though it is regarded as one of the most fertile areas in Shetland, the extent of arable has receded considerably since about the mid-nineteenthcentury, In the northerly parts and in Lamb Hoga peninsula in the South-West this was due to displacement of the population so t…

Sources for Folk Life Studies
Readers of Folk Life may be interested to learn something of other journals concerned with the subject, in this and other countries. Only those more or less directly concerned with folk life are discussed here, though it is important to remember that many relevant articles also appear in the journals of local history and antiquarian societies, and that it is on these that a fair proportion of the material in the text books of the future will be b…
