In the agri-food sector, firms and local systems can utilize both Geographical Indications and technological advancements as key strategic assets for growth in many European regions, but the combined contribution of Geographical Indications and innovation activities to the economy of European regions is still poorly investigated. Unveiling the drivers of large-scale land acquisitions in Asian countries
The rapid surge in large-scale land acquisitions (LSLAs) has been triggered by the convergence of food, financial and environmental crises in the late 2000s. Since the 2008 commodity price spike, several Asian countries have become preferential targets for LSLAs carried out by foreign companies and governments. The rising interest in Asian farmlands and natural resources arose in a complex set of political transitions and socioeconomic dynamics t…
Geographical Indications and Innovation
Understanding the relationship between the diffusion of geographical indications (GIs) and innovation in the agri-food sector represents a relevant research area not yet properly addressed by the current literature. Our contribution aims to fill this gap by investigating the extent to which the diffusion of GIs across EU regions affects technological innovation. We investigate this issue through a Neo-Schumpeterian 'distance-to-the-frontier' mode…
The Dimensions of Agricultural Diversification
Diversification in agriculture could ensure the survival of farming by broadening the income base of farms and encouraging agricultural sustainability. The diversification of on-farm activities may depend on socioeconomic and environmental characteristics. Although multifunctionality is a hotly debated topic, few papers have focused on the farm characteristics that influence diversification and none have focused on the influence of the spatial pa…
