Bringing social institutions into global value chain analysis
Global value chain (GVC) analysis has been developed to understand the changing nature of global production and distribution processes, but it has not been widely adopted by sociologists to understand the implications of globalization for work, employment and the levers for upgrading labour conditions. To understand the extent to which insertion in GVCs creates opportunities for the upgrading of labour and skills, it is necessary to consider the …
The state and the union learning agenda in Britain
The emergence of the union learning agenda under the New Labour variant of neo-liberalism has produced a debate on the appropriateness of union involvement in this arena of activity. The incorporation thesis argues that unions merely implement policy over which they have had little influence. The critical engagement thesis suggests that there may be union gains, but these are emergent. The article reviews key debates and considers the key outcome…
Making the connections
The concept of global value chains (GVCs) has been developed to explore the changing nature of the insertion of economies in global production and distribution processes. This literature contributes to the understanding of how globalisation can lead to the upgrading of capabilities of firms and countries as a result of knowledge flows within global networks but does not provide insights into processes of skill formation that to a large degree det…

As Work, Employment & Society enters its 21st year, the co-Editors of WES for 2005-2007 take stock of the recent progress of the Journal, as shown by three main trends: regular upward growth in submissions; pluralism in terms of theory, method, and disciplinary contribution; and increasing internationalisation of the readership, author base, substantive coverage, and reputation of WES. Key features of the Journal which are believed to have contri…

Power at work
Reflecting on a research project on workplace learning amongst low-grade staff in the public sector, this paper identifies a number of key issues arising from the research process. The theme which runs throughout the paper is a concern with the nature of power, both in the workplace and in the research process. The research itself focused on a relatively powerless section of the workforce. The process of securing access contributed to the researc…
Job change and workplace learning in the public sector
Focussing here on local authorities and health services, this paper examines the significance of new technology to unskilled work in the public sector as it is developing and the implications for workplace learning. An argument is developed that new technology is central to a minority of examples of job change, although, significantly, it is more important to staff–initiated change and to workers’ ability to fully participate in life beyond the w…
