Population attributable fractions of workplace mistreatment for mental health problems among employees
Workplace mistreatment, including sexual harassment, incivility, and bullying, has been linked with mental health problems. However, evidence is scarce regarding the contribution of these individual and combined forms of mistreatment to the overall mental health burden in the higher education institution (HEI) workforce. This study examined associations between individual and combined forms of workplace mistreatment and self-assessed anxiety and …
A darkside of academia
Objective Bullying in academia, often characterised by insulting comments, persistent criticism, personal or even physical abuse, and threats, is a persistent issue, with prevalence varying across countries and institutions. Hierarchical structures within higher education institutions create power dynamics that may exacerbate the prevalence and impact of bullying. This study aims to examine the prevalence and causes of bullying among faculty in a…
The return to work after sick leave due to common mental disorders among young employees
The study participants identified similar factors that promoted and hindered the return to work process. Young employees need more support from employers and various welfare agencies. Managers need to know more about the return to work process and the responsibility of involved stakeholders. No expressed gender differences were identified
Sexual harassment, bullying, burnout and organisational support during the Covid-19 pandemic in Swedish medical faculty – a survey study
This study investigated the prevalence of bullying and sexual harassment in Swedish medical faculty during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, associations between these factors and burnout were investigated as well as the buffering role of social support from colleagues and managers. The study demonstrated that women tended to report more frequent bullying. Moreover, respondents who were more frequently exposed to bullying and sexual harassment …
Trajectories of procrastination among Swedish University students over one academic year
In this cohort of Swedish university students, self-rated procrastination levels were stable over the academic year. Perfectionistic concerns, but not gender identity or perfectionistic strivings, was associated with higher levels of procrastination
The Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of the Productivity Measurement and Enhancement System Intervention to Reduce Employee Work-Related Stress and Enhance Work Performance
ProMes is not cost-effective in terms of work-related stress levels, but the intervention seemed to have increased efficiency in some objective work performance measures, albeit at a relatively high extra cost
Do Attitudes towards Work or Work Motivation Affect Productivity Loss among Academic Employees
Work motivation and job attitudes are important for productivity levels among academic employees. In situations where employees perceive problems, for example, health-related and work environment-related problems, the ability to perform at work could be affected, which may result in fewer publications, reduced quality and less research funding. Few studies, however, have paid attention to productivity loss among academic employees in order to und…
Investigating the association between publication performance and the work environment of university research academics
The purpose of this review was to investigate the association between publication performance and the organizational and psychosocial work environment of academics in a university setting. In 2018 we conducted database searches in Web of Science, Medline and other key journals (hand-searched) from 1990 to 2017 based on population, exposure and outcome framework. We examined reference lists, and after a title and abstract scan and full-text readin…
An overlooked key to excellence in research
Theories of what determines research performance have evolved from political and economic science, amongst other disciplines. Contemporary research shows that universities have a problematic work environment characterized by bullying, insecure jobs, and dysfunctional leadership. In this study, we explore the relationship between the psycho-social work environment (PSWE) and research performance. The study consists of longitudinal data from a medi…
Early work-environmental indicators of bullying in an academic setting
The purpose of this study was to use a longitudinal approach to investigate the association between work-related psychosocial factors and workplace bullying in an academic setting. A questionnaire was sent out three times to about 4500 academic- and non-academic staff in a medical university. Those two group were analyzed together and separately. Logistic regression analyses were used to calculate odds ratios (OR). In the study, we found that fac…
A Gender Perspective on Sick Leave Among Young Adults - Barriers and Resources for Return to Work as Experienced by Young Employees and Managers
Introduction: About 20% of the working-age population in the average OECD country is suffering from a mental disorder. The prevalence rates are especially high among young adults and women. Young adults need to deal with challenges connected to growing up and entering the labour market, their young age often leaving them with little experience and a low level of preparedness for failure. Moreover, young women and men are confronted with gender no…
Experience of Stress Assessed by Text Messages and Its Association with Objective Workload—A Longitudinal Study
Exploring stress trajectories in detail and over a long time may give valuable information in terms of both understanding and practice. We followed a group of primary health care employees in a randomized controlled trial. The objective was to describe their experience of stress, explore the intra-individual variability and examine the association between the experience of stress and the objective workload. Weekly text messages with a single item…
Promoting Evidence-Based Practice for Improved Occupational Safety and Health at Workplaces in Sweden. Report on a Practice-Based Research Network Approach
Despite the rapid growth in research and R&D expenditures, the translation of research into practice is limited. One approach to increase the translation and utilization of research is practice based research networks. With the aim of strengthening evidence-based practice (EBP) within occupational health services in Sweden (OH-Services), a practice-based research network (PBRN-OSH) was developed. The PBRN-OSH includes researchers and representati…
Process Evaluation of a Participative Organizational Intervention as a Stress Preventive Intervention for Employees in Swedish Primary Health Care
This study is a process evaluation of a trial examining the effects of an organizational intervention (Productivity Measurement and Enhancement System or ProMES) on employee stress. The aims were to explore the implementation process and fidelity to the intervention guidelines, examine the influence of contextual factors (hindrances and facilitators) and explore participants' experience of working with ProMES. We used the UK Medical Research Coun…
Cost-Effectiveness of a Problem-Solving Intervention Aimed to Prevent Sickness Absence among Employees with Common Mental Disorders or Occupational Stress
The cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness of a work-directed intervention implemented by the occupational health service (OHS) for employees with common mental disorders (CMD) or stress related problems at work were investigated. The economic evaluation was conducted in a two-armed clustered RCT. Employees received either a problem-solving based intervention (PSI; n = 41) or care as usual (CAU; n = 59). Both were work-directed interventions. Data r…
Workplace Bullying as Experienced by Managers and How They Cope
The study concludes that bullying can occur in all types of organization. To prevent it we need to look primarily at organizational factors. Social support is also crucial for managers' ability to cope successfully with bullying
Health and Work Environment among Female and Male Swedish Elementary School Teachers—A Cross-Sectional Study
The results of this study can help us to develop a more sustainable work environment for female and male teachers. A more sustainable work environment might attract more people to the profession and incentivize existing teachers to remain in the profession
Implementation of the Swedish Guideline for Prevention of Mental ill-health at the Workplace
ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT03322839 (trial registration: 09/19/2017)
Perceived health and work-environment related problems and associated subjective production loss in an academic population
Subjective production loss in academia can be associated with health and work- environment problems. These losses appear similar for women and men even though younger female academics, women in lower academic ranks and those with fewer years of employment in their current workplace report a higher prevalence of health problems and combined work-environment and health problems than men
Developing a practice guideline for the occupational health services by using a community of practice approach
The described development process is a feasible process for guideline development. For future guideline development expectations of the work involved should be more clearly communicated, as well as the purpose and tasks of the CoP-group. Moreover, possibilities to improve support from managers and colleagues should be explored. This paper has important implications for future guideline development; it provides valuable information on how practiti…
Preventing sickness absenteeism among employees with common mental disorders or stress-related symptoms at work
ClinicalTrials NCT02563743 Sep 28 2015
Validation of a measure of health-related production loss
The present study shows that this measure of health-related production loss is a valid measure for capturing production loss due to illness, and that work ability is more strongly correlated with health-related production loss than people's general health is. The result shows an average of about 50 % reduced production due to illness, with back pain being the most costly
