Barriers to Digital Health Utilization and Equity Among a Community Cohort of Adults with HIV in New York City
Digital health tools are becoming increasingly essential for accessing health information, resources, and delivery of clinical care and supportive services. Recognizing the potential for digital tools to broaden access to care and monitoring and managing health conditions, a growing body of research has shown that the expansion of internet mediated health resources and services also has the potential to exacerbate rather than mitigate health ineq…
Housing Status, Medical Care, and Health Outcomes Among People Living With HIV/Aids
Background. Accumulating evidence suggests responses to HIV that combine individual-level interventions with those that address structural or contextual factors that influence risks and health outcomes of infection. Housing is such a factor. Housing occupies a strategic position as an intermediate structural factor, linking “upstream” economic, social, and cultural determinants to the more immediate physical and social environments in which every…
Determinants of physical and global functioning in adult HIV-positive heterosexual men
Little is known about the psychosocial factors that might impact the functioning ability of heterosexual men living with HIV. We examined positive and negative coping, social support, and HIV stigma as predictors of physical and global functioning in a cross-sectional sample of 317 HIV-infected adult heterosexual male patients recruited from clinical and social service agencies in New York City. Study participants were primarily minority and low …

Cost-Utility Analysis of the Housing and Health Intervention for Homeless and Unstably Housed Persons Living with HIV
Associations between substance use, sexual risk taking and HIV treatment adherence among homeless people living with HIV
Prior research suggests that the interconnections between substance use, HIV risk and lack of adherence to HIV medications are especially strong among homeless individuals. Thus, study of these interconnections warrants public health attention. The objectives of this paper are to describe patterns of alcohol and drug use, associations between substance use and participation in high-risk sex, and associations between substance use and adherence to…

The impact of ancillary HIV services on engagement in medical care in New York City
The advent of antiretroviral therapies in 1996 prompted an interest in the role played by ancillary services in improving access to and retention in medical care, particularly since the success of the new therapies is often contingent upon ongoing and appropriate primary medical care. Using self-reported survey data from a longitudinal representative sample of 577 HIV-positive adults in New York City, this paper explores the impact of such suppor…
HIV-1 seroprevalence and risk behaviors in an urban African-American community cohort
OBJECTIVES. Previous attempts at obtaining population estimates of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) seroprevalence have been beset by problems of cooperation bias. As part of the fourth round of study with an urban African-American community cohort, the following investigation was aimed at assessing HIV-1 prevalence and the relative importance of sex and drug injection as risk factors in infection. METHODS. Personal interviews were con…
The Communes of the 1970s
This article examines who joined the communes of the 1970s and challenges many common assumptions about partici- pants and their motivations. Not all commune members were from middle class backgrounds. Very few came from broken homes. On several measures, those who joined communes were less alienated than other Americans at the time. Commune members were innova- tors and experimenters; however, rates of involvement in noncon- ventional political,…

A follow-up sample of 635 individuals who lived in a variety of communes in the early 1970s was restudied using personal interviews and self-administered questionnaires. Ex-commune members are less likely to have married than others in their age group. Sizable proportions currently live in multi-adult households. The…
Amana
In the annals of American utopianism, the Society of True Inspiration, better known as the Amana Society, stands out as one of the country's most successful communal experiments. We can measure this group's history in centuries rather than in months. These sturdy religious communists traced their past to a mystical Christian movement in eighteenth-century Germany. For years the Inspirationist Church remained small and insignificant, but the migratio…
Changes in Moral Judgments among Student Populations
Social Change, Gender Roles, and New Religious Movements
The relationship between gender role ambiguities and new religious movements is explored by an analysis of religious and nonreligious communes utilizing both survey and ethnographic data. The existence of a single, morally absolute set of definitions and specific rules concerning sexuality and gender roles distinguishes religious from secular communal movements. Participants in religious groups are characterized by uncertainty about rather than o…
Worldviews, Ideologies and Social Experimentation
This paper considers a number of conceptual and methodological ambiguities in the empirical study of culture change as exemplified in Robert Wuthnow's The Consciousness Reformation. Difficulties arise from the failure to distinguish between collective and individual-level manifestation of culture, and from the tendency to ignore the variable role of interacting collectivities for the development of symbol systems and their ability to affect behav…
