  • Neolithic adaptation and the Holocene functioning of Tertiary palaeodrainages in southern Egypt and northern Sudan

    Open Access•William P Mchugh, Gerald G Schaber et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1989•Citada por: 9•Referências: 17

The 'radar rivers' of the southern Eastern Sahara are systems of aggraded valleys containing inset drainage channels, now entirely obscured by wind-blown sand in the dry and hostile open desert. These features, first recognized on radar images, are remnants of the very different and moister landscapes of the Pleistocene and early Holocene. Proof of their attraction for early human settlement are the Acheulean artefacts that are found buried in al…

  • Paleorivers and geoarchaeology in the southern Egyptian Sahara

    Open Access•William P Mchugh, John F Mccauley et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1988•Citada por: 6•Referências: 8

Interpretation of Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR) images acquired during the November 1981 flight of Columbia led to the idea that a paleodrainage system of regional and perhaps transcontinental proportions crossed southern Egypt and northern Sudan prior to the onset of Quaternary aridity. Three seasons of field investigations in two locales (Wadi Arid and Wadi Safsaf, some 70‐80 km apart) near the Sudan border of southern Egypt confirmed initial int…

  • Identification of a Sinagua Agricultural Field by Aerial Thermography, Soil Chemistry, Pollen/Plant Analysis, and Archaeology

    Open Access•G Lennis Berlin, J Richard Ambler et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1977•Citada por: 14•Referências: 6

Aerial thermograms of an area in north-central Arizona immediately to the north of Merriam Crater have revealed the existence of parallel arrays of alternating ridge and swale linear features in the ashfall zone of Sunset Crater. The patterns are not easily identified on simultaneously acquired panchromatic photographs. Pollen and soil analyses confirm the highly geometric pattern to be a previously unrecognized prehistoric agricultural field. Re…
