  This article highlights three previously unnoticed name-acrostics/telestics: the reverse-acrostic ΖΕΥΣ (Zeus) in Callimachus’ Hymn to Zeus (40–3), the reverse-telestic ΙΗΣΩΝ (Iêsôn, the Greek form of Jason) in the final lines of Apollonius of Rhodes’ Argonautica (4.1774–8) and the reverse-telestic IASO (the Latin form of Jason) in the opening lines of Valerius Flaccus’ Argonautica (1.4–7). I propose that we read some key passages of the Aeneid and the Metamorphoses in the active pursuit of acrostics and telestics, just as we have been accustomed to read them in the active pursuit of allusions and intertexts; and that we do so with the same willingness to make sense of what we find.   This chapter explores how the Augustan poets respond to both the poetics and the politics of the Aeneid. It focuses on Horace, Propertius, and Ovid, and then only a few of their poems.
