The Great Colonization Debate
Culture, Altruism, and Conflict Between Ancestors and Descendants
Anthropologists often recorded the typical amount of kinship altruism - that is, the altruism between individuals who identify one another as kin -- they observed in what they referred to as tribal or traditional societies (e.g., Murdock 1949; Keesing 1975; Fortes 1969; Evans-Pritchard 1940). This altruism, they noted, was extended to very distant kin. This altruism toward distant kin, as several scholars have pointed out (E. O. Wilson, D.S. Wils…
Languages, Science and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence
In 1992, the 500th anniversary of the voyages of Christopher Columbus, a group of researchers in the United States, working under a grant from NASA, will begin conducting a search for intelligent extraterrestrial radio signals. The author discusses a method of constructing a language, based on the rudiments of logic, mathematics and the physical sciences, that could be used to successfully communicate with beings from other planets
Languages, Science and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence
We discuss a method of constructing a language which is based on the rudiments of logic, mathematics and the physical sciences. We believe that our construction gives some insight into the nature of language acquisition and the role that experience plays in this process, and we hope that this work will have some impact on the next generation of computer languages – languages which, we think, should incorporate some science in their basic structur…
