This study sought to examine the prevalence and factors associated with women’s autonomy to refuse risky sex in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Data for the study were extracted from the …
Identity and Covid-19 in Canada
Background During the COVID-19 pandemic, growing evidence from the United States, the United Kingdom, and China has demonstrated the unequal social and economic burden of this health crisis. Yet, in Canada, studies assessing the socioeconomic and demographic determinants of COVID-19, and how these determinants vary by gender and ethnic minority status, remain scarce. As new strains of COVID-19 emerge, it is important to understand the disparities…

“If We Don’t Regroup, Hunger Will Kill Us…”
This study contributes to the body of knowledge on IDPs in the context of security crisis related to terrorism. Very little research has been done on covid-19 amongst IDPs in Africa and this is one of the first studies in Burkina Faso. Our diversified sample allowed us to consider the discourses of humanitarian actors working with IDPs, but also the discourses of IDPs in a context of aggravated health and security crisis. The challenges encounter…
Is intimate partner violence vertically transmitted among women in sub-Saharan Africa? Evidence from demographic health surveys between 2010 and 2019
This study concluded that women whose mothers experienced IPV were more likely to have experienced IPV. Our study also identified that education, rural areas, and female-headed households were protective factors against experiencing IPV. To address the groups of women at higher risk for experiencing IPV, we recommend ensuring that girls complete their education to promote greater wealth and resources

Multilevel determinants of community health workers for an effective maternal and child health programme in sub-Saharan Africa
Mother and newborn skin-to-skin contact in sub-Saharan Africa
INTRODUCTION: Skin-to-skin contact is an evidence-based intervention that signifies a situation whereby a newborn is positioned directly on the mother's abdomen or chest in order for them to have direct ventral-to-ventral skin contact. The act of skin-to-skin contact begins immediately after delivery to about 23 hours afterwards. Evidence shows that skin-to-skin contact is important in improving child health outcomes. Nevertheless, evidence on it…

This study assessed the association between indices of women’s empowerment and utilization of skilled antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal maternity care in two rural Local …
Examining the Implementation of the Performance-Based Financing Equity Strategy in Improving Access and Utilization of Maternal Health Services in Cameroon
Performance-based financing (PBF)-a supply-side strategy that incentivizes health providers based on predefined quality and quantity criteria-introduced an innovative approach to reaching the poor by means of using PBF equity instruments. These PBF equity instruments include paying providers more to reach out to poor women, selecting services used by the poor, subsidizing user fees to reduce out-of-pocket expenses, and adding complementary demand…
Background predictors of time to death in infancy
Addressing Nigeria's infant survival problem requires interventions that give attention to the key drivers - education, socio-economic status, and socio-cultural contextual issues. We therefore recommend full implementation of the universal basic education policy, and child health education programs targeted at mothers as long- and short-term solutions to the problem of poor child health outcomes in Nigeria. We also argue in favor of better use o…

Closing the diversity and inclusion gaps in francophone public health
Is the COVID-19 pandemic ultimately just another episode in the history of our era marked by lack of diversity (in gender, discipline, sector, method, origin and age)? Several analyses have already revealed the exclusion of women, civil society or interdisciplinarity in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.1 2 In the world of French-speaking public health, this lack of diversity is not only flagrant but above all historical and structural. The…
Building resilient health systems in Africa beyond the Covid-19 pandemic response
The inflammatory effects of IL-1α/β are controlled by IL-1R antagonist (IL-1Ra). One IL-1Ra isoform is secreted, whereas three other isoforms (intracellular IL-1Ra [icIL-1Ra] 1, 2, and 3) are supposed to remain intracellular because of the absence of a signal peptide. In contrast to the well-characterized function of the secreted isoform, the biological role of the intracellular isoforms remains largely unclear. icIL-1Ra1 represents the major iso…
