  • Paleoanthropological applications of amino acid racemization dating of fossil bones and teeth

    Jeffrey L Bada•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•1987•Citada por: 4

The general principals of the amino acid racemization based dating technique are discussed. The results obtained at Olduvai Gorge (Tanzania) and Zhoukoudian (China) are presented as an illustration of the paleoanthropological application of racemization dating. Tooth enamel provides the best material for the racemization dating of Middle to Lower Pleistocene deposits, although in some cases bones also yield reliable ages. The racemization method …

  • Aspartic Acid Racemization Ages of California Paleoindian Skeletons

    Open Access•Jeffrey L Bada•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1985•Citada por: 4•Referências: 10

The redating of the Laguna and Los Angeles Man skeletons by the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon method has shown that the Upper Pleistocene dates for these skeletons determined previously by the conventional radiocarbon method are probably incorrect. Using the revised ages for these skeletons to calibrate the aspartic acid racemization rate yields racemization ages for the Del Mar and Sunnyvale skeletons that are compatible with t…

  • Racemization of Amino Acids in Nature

    Jeffrey L Bada•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Science Reviews•1982•Citada por: 1•Referências: 4

The amino acids in living organisms are optically active. However, once biologically synthesized amino acids are isolated from the biochemical processes which maintain their optical activity, racemization reactions gradually convert the amino acids into an optically inactive mixture. Racemization proceeds by a very simple reaction, the kinetics and mechanism of which can be easily elucidated. Amino acid racemization on Earth has important applica…

  • Aspartic Acid Racemization and Radiocarbon Dating of an Early Milling Stone Horizon Burial in California

    Open Access•Darcy Ike, Jeffrey L Bada et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1979•Citada por: 1•Referências: 8

Concordant radiocarbon and aspartic acid racemization dates have been obtained for several Holocene aboriginal skeletons from coastal southern California sites. These results further demonstrate the reliability of racemization dating. One of the skeletons (SDM 16709), dated at 8,300 years, was a burial around which several milling stones had been placed. This well-dated burial indicates that the Southern California Milling Stone horizon is signif…

  • Aspartic Acid Racemization in Late Wisconsin Lake Ontario Sediments

    Open Access•Roy Allen Schroeder, Jeffrey L Bada•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1978

We have determined aspartic acid racemization and [ 14 C] ages in sediment from a 17-m piston core recovered from Lake Ontario. This core represents a depositional record extending back into the Late Wisconsin. Total organic radiocarbon ages of the glaciolacustrine lower section of the core are older than the true depositional age. Hence we suggest that these ages do not represent time elapsed since deposition but rather may be up to several thou…

  • The Dating of pre-Neandertal remains at Caune de l'Arago, Tautavel, Pyrénées-Orientales, France

    Open Access•H Delumley, M Delumley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•1977•Citada por: 1

  • Amino acid racemization dating of fossil bones

    Jeffrey L Bada, Patricia Masters Helfman•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•1975•Citada por: 27•Referências: 11

The development of amino acid racemization as a dating technique holds considerable promise for resolving questions of human evolution and culture histories. The advantages of this method are: fossil bone can be directly dated; only gram quantities are needed for analysis; and the range extends beyond that of radiocarbon. Amino acid racemization rates are dependent upon both time and temperature. In order to eliminate the need for evaluating the …

  • Pleistocene Human Occupation at Beginners Luck Cave, Florentine Valley, Tasmania

Peter Murray, A Goede et al.•Citada por: 12

EVIDENCE of human occupation dated at approximately 20,000 years BP is recorded from a cave site in the Florentine Valley in south central Tasmania. The artifact assemblage and faunal content are described and the factors giving rise to bone accumulation are examined. Occupation has been dated by 14C analysis of associated charcoal and aspartic acid racemization dating of bone with close agreement between the two methods. The interior river valle…
