Implementation strategies for integrating non-communicable disease care into primary healthcare settings in sub-Saharan Africa
This sytematic review synthesised evidence on implementation strategies for integrating non-communicable disease (NCD) care into primary healthcare (PHC) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the barriers and facilitators influencing implementation, the effects on service delivery and patient outcomes, and implications for scale-up and sustainability. Our review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines using the Population–Exposure–Outcome (PEO) framework. Studies…
Postnatal experiences of teenage mothers in selected communities in Central Region, Ghana
Teenage mothers are confronted with challenges that require the assistance of actors within the microsystem to address. We recommend that stakeholders including healthcare professionals, traditional birth attendants (TBAs), and parents be sensitive to the postnatal challenges faced by teenage mothers so that they can work at providing the necessary skills and support to enable them to cope better with motherhood
Prevalence and factors associated with knowledge of HIV Self-Test kit and HIV-Self Testing among Ghanaian women
Our study revealed a shallow knowledge of HIV Self-Testing Kit as well as a low prevalence of HIV self-testing among women in their reproductive age in Ghana. The evidence suggests that more than nine in ten women had never undertaken an HIV self-test. The observed HIVST in this study may have implications for achieving the objectives of the HIVST policy. This may impede the achievement of SDG 3.3 which seeks to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Pra…

Health-related quality of life among adults living with chronic non-communicable diseases in the Ho Municipality of Ghana
Our study revealed elevated proportions of reported problems in the "Anxiety/Depression" and "Pain/Discomfort" dimensions, indicating noteworthy concerns in these areas of HRQoL. The prevalent issues reported across HRQoL dimensions are cause for concern, posing potential exacerbation of health conditions. We advocate for collaborative efforts from the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, and relevant stakeholders to scrutinize and implement…
Estimation of the global prevalence of dementia in 2019 and forecasted prevalence in 2050
BACKGROUND: Given the projected trends in population ageing and population growth, the number of people with dementia is expected to increase. In addition, strong evidence has emerged supporting the importance of potentially modifiable risk factors for dementia. Characterising the distribution and magnitude of anticipated growth is crucial for public health planning and resource prioritisation. This study aimed to improve on previous forecasts of…

Covid-19 and Health Systems Functioning in Sub-Saharan Africa Using the “WHO Building Blocks”
Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has made major progress in improving access to health care over the past three decades. Despite efforts made toward achieving universal health coverage, the health systems of countries in the sub-region are inundated by a myriad of challenges that have become more virulent amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper discusses the health systems challenges and responses in SSA amidst the COVID-19 using the World Health Organiza…
Stigma and discrimination tendencies towards Covid-19 survivors
Historically, infectious diseases have generated fears among populations. Unhealthy handling of these fears result in the stigma and discrimination of infected patients. Globally, measures taken so far by governments to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, although helpful, have created fears in people. Consequently, there are reported Ghanaian media cases of stigmatisation against persons who were infected a…
Prevalence and determinants of maternal healthcare utilisation among young women in sub-Saharan Africa
Background Maternal health constitutes high priority agenda for governments across the world. Despite efforts by various governments in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the sub-region still records very high maternal mortality cases. Meanwhile, adequate utilization of maternal healthcare (antenatal care [ANC], skilled birth attendance [SBA], and Postnatal care [PNC]) plays a vital role in achieving improved maternal health outcomes. We examined the prev…

Childcare practices among teenage mothers in Ghana
Childcare practices by teenage mothers are far from the ideal. To improve on child health (especially children born to teenage mothers), efforts at both the macro- and exo-systems should be directed at exposing teenage mothers to best child care practices that inure to the benefits of their children. Ante- and postnatal visits should be used to provide specific education for mothers, especially first-time teenage mothers on the care needs of babi…
Management of chronic non-communicable diseases in Ghana
A myriad of challenges inhibits the effective management of CNCDs. To accelerate progress towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goal 3 on reducing premature mortality from CNCDs, the Ghana Health Service and management of the respective hospitals should ensure improved utility supply, adequate staff motivation, and regular in-service training. A chronic care management policy should also be implemented in addition to the review of the count…
