The Use of Paternity Leave by Migrants in Spain
Studies focusing on how the migrant population understands and utilises family policies are scarce in Southern European countries. We focus on the use of paternity leave by American and European migrant fathers in Spain. This work is based on an online survey of parents (QUIDAN, 2021), which is nationally representative with a sample of 3100 respondents. We have conducted descriptive statistics and explanatory multivariate models. The main result…
Workers' individual and dyadic coping with the Covid-19 health emergency
The aim of this study was to examine workers' psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic as a function of their individual coping, dyadic coping, and work-family conflict. We also tested the moderating role of gender and culture in these associations. To achieve this aim, we run HLM analyses on data from 1521 workers cohabiting with a partner, coming from six countries (Italy, Spain, Malta, Cyprus, Greece, and Russia) characterized by va…
The Impact of Paternity Leave Compared to Unemployment on Child Care and Housework Distribution in Spain
Paternity leave has been introduced in many countries as a way to foster father's co-responsibility in family obligations. This study aims \to analyse, for the Spanish case, if (1) the positive effects of the paternity leave are not only limited to the short term, but are maintained at medium and long term; (2) if a similar effect applies in the case of unemployment periods. Based on a subsample of 3388 cases derived from the Spanish Fertility Su…
Becoming primary caregivers? Unemployed fathers caring alone in Spain
This article analyses how unemployed fathers with employed partners broach childcare and how they conceive of their own identities. It aims primarily to determine whether these fathers actually play the part of primary caregivers. The analysis is based on in-depth interviews with 26 unemployed fathers who spent at least three months caring for their children. The findings show that these fathers engaged intensively in a wide variety of caring tas…
The effectiveness of corporate gender equality plans in improving leave provisions for fathers in Spain
Official Spanish policy seeks greater gender equality by, among other things, encouraging men’s use of their legal rights to parental leave and requiring employers to implement equality plans. This article contains a first-ever analysis of the extent to which company equality plans are used to improve upon the legal provisions governing parental leave and whether those improvements actually encourage greater leave use by men, help to degender lea…
Family or state responsibility? Elderly- and childcare policy preferences in Spain
Purpose Spain is typically considered a familialistic country where the family is the main responsible for individuals’ well-being. Recent demographic, socioeconomic and policy changes raise the question to what extent familialism is regarded as the preferred care arrangement in society or whether more state support is considered legitimate. The purpose of this paper is to analyse individual preferences among Spanish residents regarding care resp…
Grandparents' Role in Spanish Families' Work/Life Balance Strategies
In recent years, grandparental childcare has been instrumental to Spanish parents' ability to engage in paid work. At the same time, the use of formal childcare services, paid domestic assistance and parental leave-taking have also intensified. The objectives of this study are: (1) to estimate the scope of the support received from grandparents in caring for children; and (2) to assess the impact of the diversification of childcare resources on h…

Abuelas, abuelos y padres varones en el cuidado de la infancia
During the last years, fathers have become more involved on childcare in Spain. The aim of this article is to know whether this increasing involvement of the fathers replaces the care provided by the grandparents or, on the contrary, there is a complementary relationship. We used a sample from the Survey of Parental Leaves Use in Spain, which is composed by 1,125 dual earner respondents with at least one child under 13 years old. Our results show…
European Men's Use of Parental Leave and Their Involvement in Child Care and Housework
Over the last ten years, equal opportunities policy has tended to actively further men's use of parental leave to favour gender equality. This article draws from the European 2005 Working Conditions Survey, and more specifically the subsample of fathers with children under the age of three to analyse whether paternity leave is related to their greater involvement in childcare and housework. Zero-inflated Poisson regression analysis, controlling f…
