The influence of pain on the cognitive function of middle-aged and older couples in China
Cognitive impairment is a major public health challenge globally. While pain is a known risk factor for cognitive decline, its dyadic effects within couples remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the actor and partner effects of pain on cognitive function among middle-aged and older Chinese couples, and to examine the mediating roles of depression and social participation. This cross-sectional study used data from the 2020 Chin…
The impact of centralized volume-based procurement policy on dental implant procurement volume in medical institutions of a Western Province in China-a single-group and double-group interruption time …
Oral health constitutes a critical component of overall health, and tooth loss significantly compromises quality of life. Dental implants, as an ideal restorative solution, face accessibility challenges due to their high cost. The rapid aging of the population in China—with the proportion of individuals aged 65 and above reaching 14.9%—further intensifies the demand for such treatments. In response, the government implemented a Centralized Volume…

Does School Consolidation in Rural Areas Affect Students' Education? Empirical Evidence From China
In the late 1990s, an extensive consolidation of schools in rural China led to the amalgamation of numerous primary and secondary schools into urban schools or their discontinuation. The study aimed to investigate whether China's school consolidation movement has influenced the educational attainment of rural students. The data are sourced from the China Household Income Project (CHIP) and regional statistical yearbooks, and the cross‐section dif…
The Evangelical Aim in the History of the Great and Mighty Kingdom of China by Juan González de Mendoza, a 16th Century European Work on China
For over five centuries, the History of the Great and Mighty Kingdom of China, written by Spanish missionary Juan González de Mendoza and published in 1585 in Rome, has captured the interest of the international academic community. However, scholarship has primarily focused on Mendoza’s depiction of China as rich and powerful, potentially overlooking the evangelical purpose of his narrative and failing to explain the correlation between the posit…
Sacred Orientalism
Mendoza's History of the Great Empire of China constitutes a notable contribution to the history of the literary relationship between China and Spain. First published in Rome in 1585, the work has exerted a profound influence on international scholarship over the past four centuries. From the perspective of the evolution of Western perceptions of China, contemporary scholars have primarily assessed this text on the basis of Mendoza's elevation of…
Income distribution and unequal gains from trade
This paper studies welfare gains from trade in a tractable model with a nonhomothetic preference over product quality. We show that the welfare changes due to trade shocks are unequal across consumers and derive a parsimonious formula to measure these welfare changes as in Arkolakis et al. (2012, American Economic Review , 102, 94–130). We find that the welfare changes are larger for consumers with lower income. Moreover, this paper shows that th…

A new framework to the green economy
This study empirically examines the asymmetric relationship between public-private partnerships investment in the energy (PPPIE) sector and CO2 emissions for selected Asia economies from 1990 to 2019. For estimation, we used the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag modelling (NARDL) econometric approach. The findings reveal that a positive change in PPPIE hinders environmental quality by increasing CO2 emissions in Indonesia and Russia in lon…

Background Maintaining the subjective wellbeing of the elderly people is one of the major concerns in promoting health aging. This study concerned the influence of multi-level social capital on subjective welling and explored the affecting path among the elderly. Methods A total of 1,078 elderly individuals anonymously and effectively surveyed in 2018, data was collected including their family, workplace, community, society social capital and sub…
Multi‐product firms, product quality heterogeneity and trade liberalisation
This paper develops a model of multi‐product firms with endogenous quality across products within a firm. The model can reconcile the empirical fact that product quality and market size exhibit an inverted U relationship. In our model, on the one hand, a larger market has a larger scope of quality differentiation and induces firms to increase quality; on the other hand, market competition is more intense in a larger market, exerting a negative in…
The Association of Social Capital and Self-Rated Health Between Urban Residents and Urbanized Rural Residents in Southwest China
China has seen an accelerated process of urbanization in the past 30 years. The influence of urbanization on health is complex and primarily influenced by changes in social capital. The purpose of this research was to compare the social capital between urban residents and urbanized rural residents of southwest China and its relationship with self-rated health. It is of great significance to study the difference of social capital between urban and…
The impact of export VAT rebates on firm productivity
This paper studies the impact of export VAT rebates on firm productivity with Chinese firm‐product‐level data. We find that higher VAT rebates significantly raise firm productivity. The results are robust to various estimations of firm productivity. Moreover, this paper finds that the impact of export VAT rebates on firm productivity is significantly different across firms and sectors. More specifically, our results suggest that the impact is mai…
Study of methane migration in the shallow subsurface from a gas pipe leak
With the increased use of natural gas, safety and environmental concerns from underground leaking natural gas pipelines are becoming more widespread. What is not well understood in leakage incidents is how the soil conditions affect gas migration behavior, making it difficult to estimate the gas distribution. To shed light on these concerns, an increased understanding of subsurface methane migration after gas release is required to support effici…

Global urbanicity is associated with brain and behaviour in young people
Urbanicity is a growing environmental challenge for mental health. Here, we investigate correlations of urbanicity with brain structure and function, neuropsychology and mental illness symptoms in young people from China and Europe (total n = 3,867). We developed a remote-sensing satellite measure (UrbanSat) to quantify population density at any point on Earth. UrbanSat estimates of urbanicity were correlated with brain volume, cortical surface a…
Lead Isotopes Combined with Geochemical Baseline in Sediments
Traditional Pb isotopic identification only based on total Pb concentration and Pb isotopic ratios, resulted in difficulty for tracing Pb sources in the complex environmental medium, especially for sediment. Herein, a novel approach combining with regional geochemical baseline (RGB) and Pb isotopic ratios are used to directly trace anthropogenic Pb sources and calculate Pb source appointments in sediment. In this study, total Pb concentrations an…
