This article reproduces contributions to a panel discussing the early days of the Women's History Network (UK), delivered to its twentieth-anniversary conference. The introduction explains the panel's purpose and contributors' methodologies. The context of the network's formation, touched on in discussion, is then described and common themes identified before transcripts of the individual contributions are reproduced

The Legacy of the Nineteenth-Century Bourgeois Family and the Wool Merchant's Son
Changes in familial relations have influenced historical scholarship. The family is now seen more in terms of relationships that have to be activated to be meaningful. This study first looks at general features of the European nineteenth-century bourgeois family and its context, in particular the dramatic fall in the marital birth rate.
