Partners’ age differences and first birth transitions by age at first and second union in Europe
We examine the link between the partners’ age difference and the transition to the first birth in Europe, addressing a gap that typically considers age differences and fertility as separate research areas. Analysing GGS-II, we show that this association is moderated by age at union formation. For first unions formed before age 30, partners’ age differences show only a minimal association with births. For first unions formed later, regional patter…
Perceptions of Medically Assisted Reproduction and Fertility Postponement
The number of women using medically assisted reproduction (MAR) is rising in high-income countries. This trend is partly driven by the tendency to delay childbearing, yet infertility treatments cannot compensate for the decrease in reproductive capacity with age. Scholars are currently concerned that the increasing availability of MAR is fuelling the misconception that it can extend reproductive life. High confidence in the success of MAR later i…
The Diffusion of Late Fertility Across European Regions (2006–2018)
The rise in late fertility has emerged as a landmark trend in high-income countries in recent decades. Yet, its spread has been geographically uneven, which has largely been attributed to socioeconomic contextual factors. Our study introduces a new perspective: the role of spatial diffusion processes. We exploit the regional variation in the increase in the contribution of late fertility rates to total fertility to assess whether a region follows…
Medically assisted reproduction and non-normative family forms
This paper explores the relationship between access legislation of medically assisted reproduction (MAR) and public attitudes towards family structures in Europe. It contributes to understanding the contextual frameworks that may facilitate the formation of a family outside the different-sex couple norm. The permissiveness of MAR policies has received political attention owing to its potential to revolutionize family formation, with varying regul…
Change in the perceived reproductive age window and delayed fertility in Europe
While extensive literature documents the massive fertility delay of recent decades, knowledge about whether and how attitudes towards the timing of births have changed in Europe remains limited. Using data from two rounds of the European Social Survey, we investigate these changes and their association with macro-level fertility indicators in 21 countries. Between 2006-07 and 2018-19, societal consensus regarding the existence of optimal childbea…
Alignment, Anticipation, Adaptation, or Lagging Behind? Age-Based Regulations in Assisted Reproduction and Late Fertility
This paper focuses on age restrictions on access to infertility treatments and eligibility for their public reimbursement, exploring their relevancy in contexts of rising late birth rates (40+). I explore how age-based reimbursement policies for in vitro fertilization treatments have responded to these fertility trends in 27 high-income countries and in which regulatory frameworks for medically assisted reproduction (MAR) very late births (45+) h…
Transitions to Second Birth and Birth Intervals in France and Spain
As first births are increasingly postponed across Europe, a strong two-child family norm persists. Past research has examined educational differentials in progressions to second birth, testing various hypotheses but overlooking normative aspects. Comparing fertility surveys from France and Spain, we explore whether late first-time mothers, who have fewer reproductive biological years left to conceive, accelerate the transition to a subsequent chi…
Late motherhood, late fatherhood, and permanent childlessness
Postponement of first births and an increase in childlessness are significant trends across European countries. While educational differentials for motherhood are well documented, this is less true for fatherhood
