Benny Golson and John Coltrane
This excerpt from Lifetime Grammy Award “hall of fame” inductee Benny Golson’s autobiography follows the composer/saxophonist’s recollection of the premature death of his close friend, John Coltrane. Its intimate narrative recalls adolescent jam sessions in Philadelphia that brought together a remarkable group of future stars: Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy and Percy Heath, alongside two aspiring sax players who greatly influenced jazz history. At the c…

Biography as Erasure
Louis Armstrong's career inaugurated the commercial viability of jazz for five decades. It also created both the structural conditions and critical reception that allowed jazz to emerge into a “classical” art form, still in the process of reshaping itself today. Armstrong's life, however, has often been inadequately comprehended and derogated despite evidence to the contrary. From the distance of four decades since his death, Armstrong can be see…

The Sublime Lyrical Abstractions of Edward W. Said
For three decades or so, the complex harmonies of Edward Said's published meditations--writing that spans a remarkable range of subjects with no less remarkable intellectual control-have gathered a momentum (an elaborate conceptual entanglement) that now approximates a fully manifested symphonic edifice. Said's themes have probed literary problems and theoretical rarefactions, philosophical tangles and political quagmires. Said has searched out, …
Intellectual Collaboration in the Age of Technological Overdetermination
A somewhat hackneyed phrase came forward in early 1970s, revived recently. The vagueness of designation the primacy of learning has not deterred its advocates. When ideological battles become stale, any proximate rock seems useful. What its champions meant a quarter century ago carried usable intentions: to reorient emphasis of schooling toward student-based needs and motivations; to de-emphasize centrality of instructor as one who knows, a model…

FS: I have been in his company a number of times, mostly when I was playing with someone else. He would be there for one reason or another. I believe I first met him when I was working in Las Vegas at the Silver Slipper. They had jazz at this time. Carl Fontana was leading a group, and that's where I first met Red. He was playing trumpet in a show band, of all things, in Vegas. That was a different period of time, I guess. A different kind of sit…

DM: Sometimes I play very spare, I think. I don't have the technique that a lot of well-known piano players do, and I don't have the technique that some of the kids do. If I do anything well, it's sort of organic, because it just comes from the tunes I'm playing. Most of the tunes I play I've known since I was twelve years old. That's the trouble, too .. . repertoires. I'm not learning any new things, and that's bad. You stagnate that way. I'm go…
