Presumed Mexican Until Proven Otherwise
Non-Latino natives often conflate 'Latino' with 'Mexican,' treating Mexican as a stigmatized group. Latinos often engage in 'identity work' to neutralize this stigmatized identity. We link these micro processes of identity work with macro structures of stratification through 'intersectional typicality.' The Lacandon Maya are horticulturalists who live in the rain forest of southeastern Chiapas, Mexico. They have lived and farmed in the Lacandon Jungle for hundreds of years, and in that time, their religion and social structure became closely attuned to their patterns of subsistence.
