Community, continuity and commitment in a local Saturday football league in England
The local amateur grassroots level of English football is a neglected area of sociological research. This paper begins to address this lacuna by presenting aspects of a detailed case study of the Scunthorpe and District Football League from 1921 to 2007. This research note is a contribution to an important on-going debate in British sociology on the operationalisation of class. A comprehensive framework is proposed based on three interrelated choices. All three choices have both theoretical and empirical elements.
