This special issue on media and the environment grows out of the biennial meeting of the association of media and communication researchers in Denmark (SMiD) held at Aalborg University in Copenhagen in early May 2024. Beech Trees, Springtime, Cultures and Climates – Seasonal Journalism in Danish News Media from 1849 to 2023
Journalism is ripe with recurrent content that follows broader natural, cultural and social rhythms. Taking our departure in the concept of seasonal journalism, we conduct an exploratory case study of how Danish news media from 1849 to 2023 have covered the annual coming into leaf of beech trees. This article traces the origins of the term of the green shift, which gained increased cultural, social and political traction in Norway after it was introduced in 2015 by journalist Anders Bjartnes, editor of Energi og klima (2011-).
