  • The power of lore

Open Access•Robin Burrow, David Courpasson et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2026

Drawing on 55 interviews with professional opera singers, we consider the role that occupational myths play in helping the precariously employed make sense of their work and sustain their commitment to it. We advance our theoretical understanding in this area in two distinct ways. First, by theorizing occupational myths as a powerful social device that helps to rescript the intelligibility of precarious work, along with normative responses to it.…

  • Bloody suffering and durability

    Open Access•Robin Burrow, Rebecca Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2024•Citada por: 5•Referências: 74

In this article, we elaborate on the significance of suffering in processes of embodied identity construction. Drawing on interviews with 62 chefs employed in elite kitchens around the world, we make two main contributions. First, we extend our understanding of suffering as a traumatic, alienating experience by theorizing it as a distinctive form of embodied identity work. We show how suffering can function as a mechanism through which people for…

  • Objectal resistance

    Open Access•Laurent Taskin, David Courpasson et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 64

Flexwork, that is, the combination of shared offices and telework, is one of the major changes affecting the workplace these days. But how do employees react to these transformations of their work environment? In this article, we investigate employees’ resistance to the introduction of flexwork in a large Belgian organization. We show employees resisting this workspace transformation through the use of personal objects as means to physically reco…

  • Collective ethics of resistance

    Open Access•David Courpasson, Ignasi Martí•ARTICLE•Organization•2019

This article aims to shed light on how ‘powerless’ people can organize to survive in situations of mass oppression. Research on powerlessness often explains compliance and political inaction by a culture of silence, generated from the sedimentation of numerous experiences of defeat. We question this assertion by drawing from an illustration of certain inhabitants of the Warsaw Ghetto, who managed to create a micro-society and reclaim the social r…

  • Politics of place

    Open Access•David Courpasson, Françoise Dany et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2017•Citada por: 23•Referências: 43

The meaningfulness of the physical place within which resistance is nurtured and enacted has not been carefully considered in research on space and organizations. In this article, we offer two stories of middle managers developing resistance to managerial policies and decisions. We show that the appropriation and reconstruction of specific places by middle managers helps them to build autonomous resisting work thanks to the meanings that resister…

  • Democracy and Organization

    Open Access•David Courpasson•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2017•Referências: 7

Still a controversial issue, the idea that the “civilian” world might be becoming more democratic is juxtaposed with an opposite trend with respect to the organizational world. As Rousseau and Rivero, among others, put it: “Although we are increasingly likely to be governed by democratic political systems, our workplaces are seldom democratic.” The increasing dominance of corporate power, the persistence and refurbishment of hierarchy and bureauc…

  • Democracy and Organization

    Open Access•David Courpasson•CHAPTER•Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2015

This entry explores the different definitions of democracy and the complex problems of democratic rule. These issues are then related to the dynamics of corporate governance and the extent to which democratic arrangements can offset hierarchy, oligarchy, and bureaucracy in modern organizations.

  • Resisters at Work

David Courpasson, Françoise Dany et al.•ARTICLE•Organization Science•2012

Research has recognized the transformative dimension of resistance in the workplace. Yet resistance is still seen as an adversarial and antagonistic process that management can accept or reject; thus, understanding how resistance can actually influence workplace change remains a challenge for research. In this paper, we offer an analysis of two situations of resistance wherein resisters, organized in temporary enclaves, are able to influence top …

  • Rethinking Power in Organizations, Institutions, and Markets

Damon 2nd Golsorkhi, Jeffrey Sallaz et al.•BOOK•Rethinking Power in Organizations,…•2012•Citada por: 6

In this volume we strive to go beyond the dual approach of power opposing structural/oversocialized perspectives and situational perspectives, through theoretical and empirical contributions stressing power as a. continuously 'living' phenomenon. In particular, the volume will address issues including integrating the various forms of power in Organization Sociology. How can we reconsider the exercise of power as polymorphic and multidimensional? …

  • Dissolving the Iron Cages? Tocqueville, Michels, Bureaucracy and the Perpetuation of Elite Power

    Open Access•David Courpasson, Stewart Clegg•ARTICLE•Organization•2006

Modern management theory often forgets more than it remembers. ‘What's new?’ is the refrain. Yet, we suggest, there is much that we should already know from which we might appropriately learn, ‘Lest we forget’. The current paper takes its departure from two points of remembrance that bear on the sustained assaults on bureaucracy that have been unleashed by the critiques of recent years. These critiques include the new public management literature…

  • Managerial Strategies of Domination. Power in Soft Bureaucracies

    Open Access•David Courpasson•ARTICLE•Organization Studies•2000

This paper discusses the emergence and reinforcement of organizational political regimes based on domination and centralization in French organizations. Domination and power are old concepts in organizational sociology, but the confrontation of two well-known approaches to politics in organizations, that of Weber and that of Crozier, suggests that an `archaic' notion such as domination is still very useful for understanding how business leaders `…

  • L'action contrainte

    David Courpasson•BOOK•L' Action contrainte•2000
