  • Ownership Versus Partnership Parenting

    Open Access•Kate Henley Averett, Griffin Lacy•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2023•Citada por: 2•Referências: 23

Scholars of the family agree on four main parenting styles, varying along two axes: responsiveness and control. Parental involvement and child autonomy fall under the control axis and are assumed to have an inverse relationship; where parental involvement is high, child autonomy is assumed to be low, and vice versa. Drawing on 22 in-depth interviews and participant observation at five homeschooling conferences, we examine the dominant parenting p…

  • Queer parents, gendered embodiment and the de-essentialisation of motherhood

    Open Access•Kate Henley Averett•ARTICLE•Feminist Theory•2021•Citada por: 11•Referências: 39

  • A feminist public sociology of the pandemic

    Open Access•Kate Henley Averett•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2020•Citada por: 22•Referências: 10

In this article, I reflect on the process of interviewing 112 US parents, primarily mothers, about their experiences of pandemic‐related school closures, amidst the pandemic itself. These interviews were largely intensely emotional experiences.…

  • The Gender Buffet

    Open Access•Kate Henley Averett•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•2016•Citada por: 20•Referências: 28

Many parents and child-rearing experts prefer that children exhibit gender-normative behavior, a preference that is linked to the belief that children are, or should be, heterosexual. But how do LGBTQ parents-who may not hold these preferences-approach the gender socialization of their children? Drawing on in-depth interviews with both members in 18 LGBTQ couples, I find that these parents attempt to provide their children with a variety of gende…
