Preparing and Protecting Users Against Fraud
Financial risk management strategies of small to medium illicit drug enterprises
The illicit drug trade generates billions of dollars in revenue per year, much of which comes from wholesale and retail sales late in the supply chain. Yet, the methods retailers and low-level wholesalers use to launder this revenue remain poorly understood. Using in-depth interviews with illicit drug entrepreneurs in the United States and the United Kingdom, this article analyses laundering strategies among such market actors. Our findings indic…

The Commercialization of Ransomware
Ransomware has evolved from opportunistic attacks into a sophisticated financial enterprise sustained by cryptocurrency markets, despite enforcement pressure. Drawing on the analysis of 525 ransomware strains (2013–2025), we identify three eras: Spray-and-Prey (2013–2018; fragmented payment practices), Big Game Hunting (2018–2021; targeting high-value organizations), and Ransom Bazaar (2021–present; financialized, service-oriented extortion). The…

Collecting Data in Forbidden Places
Undertaking research with hard-to-reach, criminogenic populations in unstable and violent political environments presents significant challenges and risks to researchers, fieldworkers, and participants. Key issues to consider in such undertakings include obtaining approval from university ethics committees, gaining access to hard-to-reach participants, and devising strategies to mitigate risks. Additionally, understanding the costs of such resear…
Intimate Crimes
This is a review of the 2020 IASOC Prize Winner Intimate Crimes: Kidnapping, Gangs and Trust in Mexico City by Rolando Ochoa. Ochoa provides a masterful account of how private citizens understand risk, as kidnapping continues to be a significant problem in Mexico, and manage their private security in an attempt to reduce that risk
Trying to Make It
This book is the author's journey from the US–Mexico border to America's heartland, from America's prisons to its streets, in search of the true story of the drug trade and the people who participate in it. The book begins in the Paso del Norte area, which has been in the public eye as calls for securing the border persist. From there, it moves on to Phoenix, which was infamously associated with the drug trade through a series of kidnappings. Fin…
When prison gangs become organized crime

Challenges in gaining ethical approval for sensitive digital social science studies
The swift evolution of digital spaces challenges the established norms of ethical research policy. Ineffective ethical review diminishes researchers’ ability to conduct cutting-edge and socially sensitive research, institutions’ ability to engage at the forefront of technology, and the relationship between researcher and committee. In criminology and other disciplines that navigate sensitive research, especially when working with ephemeral data i…
Finding the Sweet Spot
This article presents a framework for understanding three different strata within the context of illicit enterprise – being low hanging fruit, occupying the “sweet spot,” and being the big enchilada. It shows that within each stratum, there is a progression of opportunity that contributes to criminal actors’ motivations to proceed with their criminal careers. Each progressing stratum has a significant barrier to entry that, once overcome, signals…
Using the Internet to Recruit Respondents for Offline Interviews in Criminological Studies
Current and ex-gang members are hard-to-reach populations for research purposes. To date, researchers have resorted to embedding themselves long-term or recruiting individuals of interest within a target community. Typically, such studies provide a great deal of empirical depth but not necessarily empirical breadth given their lack of comparative analysis and generalizability. Moreover, they often rely on snowballing or chain referral methods tha…
Under the Corporate Radar
Cybercrime is recognized as one of the top threats to UK economic security. On a daily basis, the computer networks of businesses suffer security breaches. A less explored dimension of this problem is cybercrimes committed by insiders. This paper provides a criminological analysis of corporate insider victimization. It begins by presenting reviews of insider criminal threats and routine activities theory as applied to cybercrime. Analysis of the …
