Gender disparities in rural livelihood diversification and household food insecurity in northern Ghana
Although income diversification is a well-established strategy for mitigating poverty and household food insecurity, gendered dimensions have been under-investigated. Examining a specific district in northern Ghana with heightened levels of food insecurity, we asked two questions: 1) Does income diversification reduce the risk of experiencing household food insecurity? and if so, 2) Does the relationship differ between women and men? This investi…

How is gender investigated in African climate change research? A systematic review of the literature
Norms, Equity and Social Protection
Social protection programmes do not generally account for gendered power dynamics. Oftentimes, they target women only as beneficiaries, which can intensify gendered disparities. This case study uses a mixed methods research approach to conduct a gender analysis of the Productive Safety Net Programme in Ethiopia. We find the programme has progressive gender equity goals, but these are not well implemented. Since special provisions for women are ne…
Considering gender differences in measuring household food insecurity in northern Ghana
This study compares estimates of household food insecurity between men and women living within the same household (n = 866) to assess whether there is a gender bias in reporting. The main research question is, do household food insecurity scores and prevalence categories differ between male and female spouses within households in the sample? Findings indicate that men's household food insecurity estimates were lower on average at 3.49, than women…
A feminist political ecology of farm resource entitlements in Northern Ghana
With the unprecedented feminization of agriculture globally, literature has emerged over the past decade suggesting that gender equality in agriculture could be advanced if gaps in access to farm resources between women and men are reduced. This paper examines gendered farm resource entitlements in northern Ghana. Based mainly on six months of immersive qualitative research, this case study draws from and contributes to feminist political ecology…
A bitter pill
Through a qualitative case study from the Northern Region of Ghana, this paper examines smallholders’ perceptions of environmental change and contemporary Green Revolution prescriptions promoted by foreign donors, NGOs and the state. These prescriptions seek to commercialise and intensify production in Ghana through increasing use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides and faster-growing seed varieties. We argue that many smallholders are reluctantl…
The complicated gendering of farming and household food responsibilities in northern Ghana
Farmer resistance to agriculture commercialisation in northern Ghana
Drawing on postcolonial literature and theories of farmer resistance, this article provides an empirically based alternative explanation of African farmer behaviours to narratives that blame them for their lack of technology adoption. Based on six months of ethnographic immersion in one district in the Northern Region of Ghanaa, we identify the ways that farmers defy commercial agriculture investment, government services and non-governmental orga…
Women’s household decision-making autonomy and safer sex negotiation in Nigeria
Although married women's safer sex negotiation with their husbands is critical in reducing new HIV infections in Nigeria, its linkage to women's household decision-making autonomy is less explored in Nigeria. Drawing data from the 2013 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey and using the logistic regression technique, we examined the associations between women's household decision-making autonomy and two indicators of the ability to engage in safe…
Timing and utilisation of antenatal care service in Nigeria and Malawi
As the world draws curtains on the implementation of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), there is increasing interest in evaluating the performance of countries on the goals and assessing related challenges and opportunities to inform the upcoming Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study examined changes in the timing and utilisation of maternal health care services in Nigeria and Malawi; using multivariate negative log-log and logistic …
Utilisation of skilled birth attendants over time in Nigeria and Malawi
Despite recent modest progress in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates in sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria and Malawi were still in the top 20 countries with highest rates of mortalities globally in 2015. Utilisation of professional services at delivery - one of the indictors of MDG 5 - has been suggested to reduce maternal mortality by 50%. Yet, contextual, socio-cultural and economic factors have served as barriers to uptake of such critical…
Ethical trade, gender and sustainable livelihoods
Kiah Smith’s Ethical Trade, Gender and Sustainable Livelihoods is a distinctive book amidst the growing literature on ethical and fair trade because it is entirely dedicated to a gendered analysis
Financial sustainability versus access and quality in a challenged health system
Policy makers in low and middle-income countries are frequently confronted with challenges of increasing health access for poor populations in a sustainable manner. After several years of trying out different health financing mechanisms, health insurance has recently emerged as a pro-poor health financing policy. Capitation, a fixed fee periodically paid to health service providers for anticipated services, is one of the payment policies in healt…
