  • Speech disfluency and the structure of knowledge

Stanley Schachter, Nicholas Christenfeld et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1991•Citada por: 18

It is generally accepted that filled pauses and urn) indicate time out while the speaker searches for the next word or phrase. It is hypothesized that the more options, the more likely that a speaker will say uh. The academic disciplines differ in the extent to which their subject matter and mode of thought require a speaker to choose among options. The more formal, structured, and factual the discipline, the fewer the options. It follows that le…

  • Effects of cue prominence and palatability on the drinking behavior of obese and normal humans

Lynn T Kozlowski, Stanley Schachter•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1975

This study examines the effects of cue salience and palatability (water temperature) on the water drinking of obese and normal subjects. Obese subjects drink more than do normal subjects when the water cue is prominent but do not do so when this cue is remote. Palatability does not differentially affect the drinking behavior of obese and normal subjects. These results support the extension to nonfood stimuli of the hypothesis of the hyperreactivi…

  • Manipulated time and eating behavior

Stanley Schachter, Larry P Gro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1968•Citada por: 25

By the use of doctored clocks, the external, food-relevant cue, time, is manipulated so that some Ss entered an experimental eating situation believing it to be later than their regular dinner time and others believing it to be before dinner time. Obese Ss ate more when they thought that they were eating after their regular dinner hour than they did when they thought that they were eating before their dinner hour. There is no such effect for norm…

    Stanley Schachter•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1963•Citada por: 18

Numerous studies have indicated that eminent scientists, scholars, and men of letters tend to be first-born or only children. Data are presented which indicate that this relationship is simply a reflection of the fact that scholars, eminent or not, derive from a college population in which first-borns are in marked surplus. Factors that might explain the heavy overrepresentation of first-borns in college populations are considered

  • Cognitive, social, and physiological determinants of emotional state.

Stanley Schachter, Jerome E Singer et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Review•1962

The problem of which cues, internal or external, permit a person to label and identify his own emotional state has been with us since days that James (1890) first tendered his doctrine that the bodily changes follow directly perception of exciting fact, and that our feeling of same changes as they occur is (p. 449). Since we are aware of a variety of feeling and emotion states, it should follow from James' proposition that various emotions will b…

  • When prophecy fails

Leon Festinger, Henry W Riecken et al.•BOOK•University of Minnesota Press…•1956

In 1954 Leon Festinger, a brilliant young experimental social psychologist in the process of inventing a new theory of human behavior - the theory of cognitive dissonance - and two of his colleagues, Henry Riecken and Stanley Schachter, infiltrated a cult who believed the end of the world was only months away. How would these people feel when their prophecy remained unfulfilled? Would they admit the error of their prediction, or would they, as Fe…
