Contribution of smoking to socioeconomic inequalities in mortality
In many European countries, smoking has become less important as a determinant of socioeconomic inequalities in mortality among men, but not among women. Inequalities in smoking remain one of the most important entry points for reducing inequalities in mortality
The relation between non-occupational physical activity and years lived with and without disability
OBJECTIVES: The effects of non-occupational physical activity were assessed on the number of years lived with and without disability between age 50 and 80 years. METHODS: Using the GLOBE study and the Longitudinal Study of Aging, multi-state life tables were constructed yielding the number of years with and without disability between age 50 and 80 years. To obtain life tables by level of physical activity (low, moderate, high), hazard ratios were…
Determinants of levels and changes of physical functioning in chronically ill persons
STUDY OBJECTIVE: Declines in physical functioning are a common result of chronic illness, but relatively little is known about factors not directly related to severity of disease that influence the occurrence of disability among chronically ill persons. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a large number of potential determinants (sociodemographic factors, health related behaviour, structural living conditions, and psychosocial facto…

Smoking and the compression of morbidity
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether eliminating smoking will lead to a reduction in the number of years lived with disability (that is, absolute compression of morbidity). DESIGN: Multistate life table calculations based on the longitudinal GLOBE study (the Netherlands) combined with the Longitudinal Study of Aging (LSOA, United States of America). SETTING: the Netherlands. SUBJECTS: Dutch nationals aged 30-74 years living in the city of Eindhoven and …
Recall Bias in Self-reported Childhood Health
This study examines the impact of recall bias on self-reported childhood health. In a population of people aged from 25 to 74 years, childhood health was assessed retrospectively to explore its influence on socio-economic inequalities in adult health. Data were obtained from a postal survey in the baseline of a prospective cohort-study (the Longitudinal Study on Socio-Economic Health Differences in The Netherlands). Childhood health was measured …
Living standards and mortality in the European Community
OBJECTIVE--The association between living standards and mortality in the European Community (EC) was investigated using regional level data from all EC member countries. DATA AND METHODS--Data covering the 1980s were extracted from various publications. Data on "all cause" mortality (standardised mortality ratios, both sexes, all ages), living standards (gross domestic product, car access, unemployment rates), and some potential confounders (popu…
Air pollution, lagged effects of temperature, and mortality
OBJECTIVE--To explore whether the apparent low threshold for the mortality effects of air pollution could be the result of confounding. DESIGN--The associations between mortality and sulphur dioxide (SO2) were analysed taking into account potential confounding factors. SETTING--The Netherlands, 1979-87. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS--The number of deaths listed by the day on which the death occurred and by the cause of death were obtained from th…
Determinants of regional differences in lung cancer mortality in the Netherlands
Seasonal variation in mortality in The Netherlands
STUDY OBJECTIVE--The aim was to describe the pattern of seasonal variation in all cause mortality in The Netherlands, and to analyse the contribution of specific causes of death to the winter excess of all cause mortality. DESIGN--Daily numbers of deaths in The Netherlands, by cause, were obtained for the period 1979-1987. Patterns of variation were analysed using Poisson regression. The model related the observed number of deaths to (1) the numb…
Socio-economic mortality differences in the Netherlands in 1950-1984
Regional differences in mortality from conditions amenable to medical intervention in The Netherlands
In The Netherlands, as in many other countries, important geographical variation in mortality from conditions amenable to medical intervention exists. Associations with a number of simple medical care supply characteristics (general practitioner density, hospital bed density, and percentage of regional hospital beds located in university and small hospitals) are generally weak and inconsistent, both before and after controlling for possible confo…
