  • The application of the show mine assessment model on underground mining heritage and mine tourism in Switzerland

    Open Access•Aleksandar Antić, C Scapozza et al.•ARTICLE•The Extractive Industries and…•2025•Referências: 1

The goal of the assessment procedure is to determine the mine-specific and tourist values of each show mine, based on the obtained research results. Furthermore, future development strategies will be determined, which can be of crucial importance for the management organizations of the explored show mines. The analysis and assessment of the sites in Switzerland represents the importance for the local population as well as the sustainable aspects …

  • The Standing Stone of Velmaio (Varese, North-Western Lombardy, Italy). From an Erratic Boulder to a Megalith

Open Access•C Scapozza, Christian Ambrosi et al.•ARTICLE•Open Quaternary•2024

A standing stone was found near Velmaio (Italy), on the valley floor of the Torrente Bévera. The analysis of its morphology and of traces on its surface on all faces showed that the block is not in an original position but was placed later in its vertical position. The standing stone is made of a dolomite breccia. The texture and, in particular, the lithological composition of the breccia corresponds to that of the Invorio Breccia known only from…

  • Acceleration and interannual variability of creep rates in mountain permafrost landforms (rock glacier velocities) in the European Alps in 1995–2022

    Open Access•Andreas Kellerer‐Pirklbauer, Xavier Bodin et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Cryospheric long-term timeseries get increasingly important. To document climate-related effects on long-term viscous creep of ice-rich mountain permafrost, we investigated timeseries (1995–2022) of geodetically-derived Rock Glacier Velocity (RGV), i.e. spatially averaged interannual velocity timeseries related to a rock glacier (RG) unit or part of it. We considered 50 RGV from 43 RGs spatially covering the entire European Alps. Eight of these R…

  • Evolution of fluvial environments and history of human settlements on the Ticino river alluvial plain

Open Access•Dorota Czerski, Daphné Giacomazzi et al.•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2022

The present contribution aims to provide better knowledge on the evolution of the fluvial environments of the Ticino river alluvial plain, highlighting the complex interaction of the Ticino river and its lateral tributaries with the human communities since the Neolithic. The study considers information derived from historical sources, from previous research on three sites based in the Ticino river floodplain and from data of six archaeological si…

  • The 1513 Monte Crenone rock avalanche

Open Access•Alessandro De Pedrini, Christian Ambrosi et al.•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2022•Referências: 11

As a contribution to the knowledge of historical rockslides, this research focuses on the historical reconstruction, field mapping, and simulation of the expansion, through numerical modelling, of the 30 September 1513 Monte Crenone rock avalanche. Earth observation in 2-D and 3-D, as well as direct in situ field mapping, allowed the detachment zone and the perimeter and volume of the accumulation to be determined. Thanks to the reconstruction of…

  • Schmidt hammer exposure-age dating of periglacial and glacial landforms in the Southern Swiss Alps based on R -value calibration using historical data

Open Access•C Scapozza, Chantal Del Siro et al.•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2021

As a contribution to the palaeoenvironmental history reconstruction of the Alpine periglacial domain, this study focuses on the Schmidt hammer exposure-age dating (SHD) of (peri-)glacial landforms using rebound-value (R-value) calibrations for 10 stations in the Scaradra glacier forefield (north-eastern part of the Ticino Canton, Lepontine Alps) and for 13 stations in the Splügenpass region (located between Switzerland and Italy, Rhaetian Alps). …

  • Glacial lake outburst flood hazard assessment by satellite Earth observation in the Himalayas (Chomolhari area, Bhutan)

    Open Access•C Scapozza, Christian Ambrosi et al.•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2019•Citada por: 1•Referências: 41

A case study of glacial lakes outburst flood (GLOF) hazard assessment by satellite Earth observation (EO) and numerical modelling is presented for the supraglacial and ice-contact lakes on Thangothang Chhu glacier, Chomolhari area (Bhutan). Detailed geomorphological mapping, including landslide and rock glacier inventories, as well as surface displacement determination using an interferometric SAR (InSAR) satellite, allowed a GLOF hazard assessme…

  • Improvements in 3-D digital mapping for geomorphological and Quaternary geological cartography

    Open Access•Christian Ambrosi, C Scapozza•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2015

In recent decades, GIS tools have been directly applied to photo-interpretative geomorphological and geological mapping. Although these tools are powerful and effective tools in the creation of digital maps, it is often very difficult to obtain a correct recognition of the nature and boundaries of geomorphological landforms using two-dimensional images. In addition, the output typically requires some improvements, usually by means of field verifi…

  • Investigation on protalus ramparts in the Swiss Alps

    Open Access•C Scapozza•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2015

The origin and classification of landforms denominated as "protalus ramparts" in the scientific literature is a problem that is far from being resolved. The main objective of this contribution is to support a permafrost-related definition of protalus ramparts. If we consider the Alpine framework, protalus ramparts are generally very rare landforms; by contrast, the Alpine periglacial belt is characterised by a large diffusion of talus slopes and …

  • Relative-age dating of alpine periglacial landform surfaces with Schmidt hammer in the Swiss Alps

    Open Access•C Scapozza•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • Structure and stratigraphy of alpine periglacial talus slopes, Swiss Alps

    Open Access•C Scapozza•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • A method for assessing "scientific" and "additional values" of geomorphosites

    Open Access•E Reynard, G Fontana et al.•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2007

Over the last two decades, several methods have been developed to reduce subjectivity of geomorphosite selection through use of transparent assessment criteria. Most of these methods propose criteria such as integrity, rarity, representativeness and palaeogeographical importance for the evaluation of the «scientific value» of sites. For the assessment of their global quality, «additional values» of ecological, cultural, aesthetic and economic nat…
