  • Path Dependency versus Social Unionism in Healthcare

Open Access•Rosemary Batt, John Kallas et al.•ARTICLE•Work and Occupations•2020•Referências: 21

A central problem in contemporary employment relations is the fragmentation of work. This process is occurring in health systems as they decentralize services from hospitals to outpatient centers. While some unions have maintained inclusive employment systems, others have not. What explains this variation? The authors address this question through a matched case comparison of healthcare unions in Rochester and Buffalo, New York. The cities share …

  • Unfinished Business

    R Milkman, Eileen Appelbaum•BOOK•Unfinished Business•2013

Unfinished Business documents the history and impact of California's paid family leave program, the first of its kind in the United States, which began in 2004. Drawing on original data from fieldwork and surveys of employers, workers, and the larger California adult population, Ruth Milkman and Eileen Appelbaum analyze in detail the effect of the state’s landmark paid family leave on employers and workers. They also explore the implications of C…

  • Reducing Inequality and Insecurity

    Open Access•Eileen Appelbaum•ARTICLE•Work and Occupations•2012•Citada por: 7

In Good Jobs, Bad Jobs, Arne Kalleberg examines the institutional changes in the United States that led to a polarization of income and job quality, a rising share of poor quality jobs, and the increasing precariousness of work across the educational spectrum. He proposes reversing these developments through a new social contract that builds on the design principles that underlie flexicurity policies in the Netherlands and Denmark-flexicurity wit…

  • Macroeconomic policy, labour market institutions and employment outcomes

    Open Access•Eileen Appelbaum•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2011•Citada por: 9•Referências: 24

The increase in income inequality and household debt of middle- and lower-income households in the USA over several decades led to increasingly fragile financial institutions and set the stage for the most serious recession in the last 60 years. The proximate cause of the economic crisis was the collapse of the housing bubble that caused both the recession that began at the end of 2007 and the financial crisis that erupted in 2008. The drop in GD…

  • Work Process and Quality of Care in Early Childhood Education

Carrie Leana, Eileen Appelbaum et al.•ARTICLE•Academy of Management Journal•2009

In this study we conducted performance assessments in 62 childcare centers and surveyed 232 teachers and aides, to examine the extent to which workers crafted their jobs and how such crafting affected classroom quality. Results show that individual and collaborative job crafting are distinct constructs; work discretion is related to both; and collaborative crafting is positively related to performance, particularly for less experienced teachers. …

  • High-Touch and Here-to-Stay

Open Access•Mary Gatta, Heather Boushey et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology•2009•Citada por: 15•Referências: 33

Interactive service occupations, requiring face-to-face contact, are rapidly growing in the US as they are typically not susceptible to larger trends of off-shoring and computerization. Yet conventional paradigms of understanding the nature of that work, and in particular the skill demands, are often ill equipped to deal with the 'interactive' aspects of these gendered and racialized occupations. As a result, discussions of lower-end service occu…

  • Low-wage employment in America

    Eileen Appelbaum•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2005•Citada por: 2

Data from national surveys show the dramatic changes that have taken place in the US wage structure over the past three decades. However, these data provide only very limited information about the complex reasons why those changes have occurred and why there is significant variation in the wages of workers with similar education levels employed in similar industries. Industry case studies, on the other hand, document how firms' responses to econo…

  • Contesting Time

Peter Berg, Eileen Appelbaum et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2004•Citada por: 26•Referências: 4

The authors hypothesize that three broad factors affect the degree of workers' control over the timing and the total hours of their work: the institutional and regulatory environment within the country, labor market conditions, and management and labor union strategies. Drawing from their interviews in 2000 with managers, public sector policy-makers and administrators, and union leaders, as well as from previous literature, they illustrate how th…

"Based on their visits to 44 plants and surveys of more than 4,000 employees, Eileen Appelbaum, Thomas Bailey, Peter Berg, and Arne L. Kalleberg concluded that companies are indeed more successful when managers share knowledge and power with workers and when workers assume increased responsibility and discretion." "The study of steel, apparel, and medical electronics and imaging plants revealed much. In self-directed teams, workers were able to e…

Despite formidable obstacles, a small but growing number of U.S. companies rccognize that today's domestic and international markets require them to transform their production process. On the basis of more than ten years of survey data and the evidence of case studies, Eileen Appelbaum and Rosemary Batt analyze the experiences of these companies. Their findings reveal two distinct and coherent models of the new American workplace. One is an Ameri…

  • What Was Driving the 1982-88 Boom In Temporary Employment

Open Access•Lonnie Golden, Eileen Appelbaum•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•1992•Citada por: 15

The level of temporary help employment rose two-and-a-half fold between 1982 and 1988, was quite variable and had a disproportionately larger effect on employment flows. One conventional explanation suggests that changing demographic composition of the labor force in favor of groups preferring nontraditional employment arrangements fueled the temporary help boom. Demand-side views emphasize the volatility in labor demand, intensified price compet…
