Successful Aging and Gambling
Using a sample of 449 Las Vegas and Clark County, Nevada, residents ages 55 and older, the authors examine predictors of past-year and lifetime risk for problem gambling behavior. They examine the salience of gambling opportunities for the respondents' decision to move to Las Vegas and whether they currently gamble as a significant part of their recreation. Airline Security After the Event
Interviews with airline and security employees and public information are used to examine the real and perceived outcomes of public policy reactions to the terrorist attacks of September 11. The examination uses the classic functionalist perspective of Robert Merton and the more recent insights of Raymond Boudon. In an examination of the verbal explanations ordinary gamblers provide for their conduct, it was found that the motive of 'play, leisure, and recreation' was most often given to explain their behavior, with the related motive of 'relieving boredom and generating excitement' ranking a distant second.
