Differentiating the Role of Construction and Non-construction Affluence in China’s Ecological Footprint and Built-up Land Footprint
This study examines the long-run determinants of China’s ecological footprint (EF) and its built-up land footprint (BF) components using annual data from 1970 to 2024. Using the Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence and Technology framework, the analysis includes construction value added (CVA), gross domestic product excluding construction (GDPCE), primary energy consumption (PEC) and urbanization as explanatory variables. The…

Persistence of tourism electronic card transaction expenditure
In this paper, we investigate the statistical characteristics of tourism electronic card transaction expenditure in New Zealand. The analysis has been disaggregated by considering 8 types of services and 15 regions. Furthermore, we have separated the analysis of persistence by domestic and international electronic card transaction expenditure. The results show substantial differences between domestic tourists and international tourists, with a me…
Tourism diversification and income inequality in a developed economy
This study examines the effects of tourism diversification on income inequality in New Zealand, a developed economy highly reliant on international tourism. Rather than assuming a uniform impact of tourism on income distribution, the paper builds on theoretical insights from modernization theory and political economy perspectives to explore how diversification by source markets and travel purposes may produce varying distributional outcomes. Usin…

Institutional quality, financial development and tourism market diversification in OECD and non-OECD countries
This study examines the determinants of tourism market diversification in 70 OECD and non-OECD countries, while considering the roles of institutional quality and financial development. A model of tourism diversification is developed using the novel method of moment quantile regression and estimated using data span of 24 years. The results show that improved institutional quality, financial development and an increase in average income of visitor…
Taming the declining birth trend in OECD countries
This paper examines the number of births and birth rates in a group of 38 OECD countries using fractional integration. Using annual data from 1950 to 2021, the results indicate for the number of births significant positive trends in the cases of four Latin American countries (Costa Rica, Colombia, Chile and Mexico) along with Israel, while negative trends are detected only for Japan and Portugal. In case of the birth rates, there are no positive …
Persistence and trends in governance indicators in Sub-Saharian Africa
This paper focuses on the analysis of persistence and trends in various governance indices over the 47 countries that form the Sub-Saharan Africa. Based on fractional integration methods, we examine the order of integration of six indicators for each country along with the significancy of the time trends. The results indicate that Rwanda (and in a lesser extent Ethiopia) lead the countries with the highest coefficients for the time trend, while E…
Primary Sector Value Addition and Environmental Performance in BRICS
In recent decades, the BRICS countries have experienced rapid economic growth, much of which has been driven by agriculture, natural resource extraction, and industrial exports. However, the continued expansion of these sectors is accompanied by growing environmental vulnerabilities. While value addition in agriculture, forestry, and fishing is crucial for development, it is also widely acknowledged as a contributor to land degradation. Against t…
Persistence in international prices of agricultural renewable commodities
In this work, we have examined historical data of renewable commodity prices by looking at the order of integration of the series from a fractional perspective. Using historical data from 1900 to 2022, we look at international prices of banana, cocoa, cotton, tea, hides, jute, lamb, coffee, maize, timber, beef, rubber, palm oil, rice, wheat, sugar, and wool. The empirical findings support the hypothesis of fractional integration and mean reversio…
The role of ICT, human capital and economic growth on sustainable forest management
Forests provide a critical role in many ecosystem services such as biodiversity conservation, soil erosion prevention, land conservation and climate change mitigation. However, forest degradation and deforestation have been increasing globally in recent years, causing serious environmental and social problems. The main objective of this study is to analyze the impacts of information and communication technologies (ICT), human capital (HC) and eco…
Modelling the determinants of birth tourism demand
Birth tourism has been steadily rising in recent years as potential mothers travel across borders with the main purpose of giving birth. However, the economic reasons behind this form of tourism have not been adequately examined in the existing literature. This study explores the determinants of birth tourism by incorporating factors such as the average income of visitors, price level, exchange rate, and infant mortality while accounting for the …
The economic impact of educational tourism development
In many nations, one of the major tourism thrusts is educational tourism development, especially the improvement of educational tourism receipts. The tourism sector is more effective when there is an increase in educational tourism revenues as against a mere increase in educational tourism arrivals. However, the few papers on the economic impact of educational tourism development have largely ignored the impact of educational tourism receipts. Th…
An evaluation of the footprint of diversification strategy in the tourism sector
For the first time, the relationship between tourism market diversification and a comprehensive measure of environmental degradation – ecological footprint, has been examined in this study. Using a Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence, and Technology (STIRPAT) framework, additional explanatory variables have been recognised in the analysis. A recently introduced quantile regression approach has been used to investigate the di…

Persistence in Australian tourism employment industries
There are many studies that have focussed on the different dimensions of employment in several industries during COVID-19. However, the impact of the pandemic on employment in the tourism industries has been underexplored. Moreover, we are not aware of any study that has considered the impact of the pandemic on employment in different sub-sectors within the tourism industries. This paper analyzes the effect of COVID-19 on employment in Australian…
Modeling the determinants of tourism diversification
This paper aims to use an augmented tourism demand model to examine the determinants of tourism diversification by using the data from 46 tourism markets and seven tourism activities in Australia from 1987 to 2021. The tourism markets in Australia have been further divided into sub-regions, and each region has been analyzed. The empirical evidence shows that an increase in the average income in the source markets and infrastructure investment in …

Persistence of fisheries production
Previous studies have focussed on different aspects of fisheries production in several countries. However, the literature has been largely silent on the persistence of fisheries production, which has numerous important policy implications. In this article, we examine time series data corresponding to fisheries production in a group of 31 OECD countries. The analysis focuses on three distinct production series for each country: total fisheries pro…

Inequality Persistence of 21 OECD Countries from 1870 to 2020
This paper investigates inequality persistence in a group of 21 OECD countries using linear and non-linear fractionally integrated methods. Using linear models, the results show that the series are strongly persistent which implies lack of average reversal and permanency of shocks. Mean reversion is only found in the case of Finland and partial evidence of mean reversion is detected for Belgium, Greece, Austria and the Netherlands. The results ar…

Fractional persistence in income poverty in Africa
This paper examines income poverty in Africa by looking at the time series properties of the series corresponding to the household consumer expenditures in 53 African countries. Using fractional integration the results indicate that the series are highly persistent, displaying orders of integration in the interval (0, 1) in some countries or values equal to or higher than 1 in some others. The main implication of the empirical findings is that lo…
Towards sustainable development
The human demand on forest products has been getting more significant over time as people increasingly continue to convert forests to agricultural and urban uses. The consequence of these human activities is the loss of forest resources through deforestation and forest degradation as exemplified by the continued degradation of the Amazon rainforest, which has implication for sustainable development. However, several economic aspects of forestry h…

Sustainable electricity generation
Electricity remains the most important form of end-use energy consumption and an important factor for economic growth and development. However, electricity generation also constitutes a great source of concern for global warming and climate change with threats to sustainable development as fossil fuels dominate electricity generation fuel mix for most economies of the world. This is exactly the case for Italy with fossil fuels dominating electric…

Diversification in the tourism sector and economic growth in Australia
In most countries inclusive of Australia, tourism policies do not only deal with how to diversify tourism markets but also how to diversify tourism activities. Efforts are often made to increase the inflows of tourists from different source markets and to improve arrivals for various tourism activities. However, the existing literature on the economic impact of the diversification of the sector has not dealt with the economic impact of diversific…
