Women’s empowerment and “success at work” self-help workshops, webinars, and advice books proliferate in our neoliberal economy. These initiatives purport to help women navigate workplaces and overcome their limitations to be more successful at work. Through a qualitative content analysis of 15 advice books published from 2013 to 2020, this article analyzes how women’s and men’s work relationships are depicted in popular press career advice books…

    Open Access•Gretchen Webber, Patti Giuffre•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2019•Citada por: 7•Referências: 21

Voluminous scholarship documents the wage gap, occupational segregation, sexual harassment, and other forms of gender inequality at work. Few sociological studies explore women's work relationships with other women. Our article summarizes existing research from several disciplines on women's working relationships with other women. Specifically, three themes about the conditions of work emerge that discourage women's support for other women: (a) n…

    Open Access•Julie A Reid, Gretchen Webber et al.•ARTICLE•Symbolic Interaction•2015•Citada por: 3•Referências: 34

This article examines the importance of setting as a factor shaping college students' dating and sexual behavior using a Goffmanian framework to explore how U.S. students interpret a vignette describing a casual heterosexual encounter at a party followed by a sexless dinner date. Rather than simply follow generalized cultural scripts, students indicate that college heterosexual encounters are guided by standardized patterns of behaviors based on …

Existing research extensively documents the health crisis in Russia and the former Soviet Union. In this article, the authors examine what historical factors set the stage for these trends and, perhaps more importantly, their origins. Specifically, the authors analyze Russian history, culture, and state ideology to explore the connections between masculinities and alcohol and to apply existing sociological theories of gender to this unique social…

  • Casual Hookups to Formal Dates

    Open Access•Julie A Reid, Sinikka Elliott et al.•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•2011•Citada por: 33•Referências: 16

Hooking up,' a popular type of sexual behavior among college students, has become a pathway to dating relationships. Based on open-ended narratives written by 273 undergraduates, we analyze how students interpreted a vignette describing a heterosexual hookup followed by a sexless first date. In contrast to the sexual script which holds that women want relationships more than sex and men care about sex more than relationships, students generally a…

    Open Access•Gretchen Webber, Christine L Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•2008•Citada por: 35•Referências: 19

Part-time work schedules are a popular option for many women struggling to reconcile the competing demands of employment and motherhood. They are controversial among feminists because they are associated with job penalties that promote gender inequality. Previous research on this topic has focused on issues confronting women workers in professional and managerial jobs. In this article, we compare and contrast the experiences of women in professio…
