A Group of Late Medieval Inscribed Tiles from Bordesley Abbey
A group of unusual, large, rectangular ceramic tiles excavated from the abbey church of Bordesley (Worcestershire) is presented. These tiles were handmade locally, using the sgraffiato technique, and have part of two inscriptions in English. The larger inscription, which combines Lombardie capitals with black letter, was commemorative. Some approaches to the archaeology of Christian pilgrimage
The scale of Christian pilgrimage, and levels of social and economic activity along pilgrim routes, are considered. Work in several disciplines is used to highlight some of the dynamics involved. Possible avenues of archaeological research are explored
Modes of Production among Medieval Tilers

The Organisation of the Medieval Tile Industry
This paper looks at the organisation of medieval tileries, concentrating particularly on kiln sites thought to have produced floor tiles. Models for different forms of organisation are applied to excavated sites. the economic implications of changes in modes of operation are discussed

A Scientific Study of Medieval Tiles From Bordesley Abbey, Near Redditch (Hereford and Worcester)
Archaeological work, based on the external characteristics of decorated floor tiles from the Cistercian monastery of Bordesley, has identified and characterised a series of industries supplying that site from the earlier 13th century through to dissolution in 1538. In this paper we extend these interpretations by means of neutron activation analysis (NAA) data on the body compositions of the tiles, and compare these results with manually recorded…
