Negotiating Space at Emőd-Nagyhalom
In this paper we present the results of a second systematic core drilling campaign at the Bronze Age site of Emőd-Nagyhalom in north-eastern Hungary, conducted in autumn 2024. Focusing on a group of houses situated in the outer settlement just beyond the north-eastern section of the enclosing ditch, the campaign built on earlier geomagnetic prospection, surface survey and preliminary coring that indicated an unexpectedly well-preserved, stratifie…

The times of a Bronze Age tell and outer settlement
In this paper we present the results of a systematic core drilling campaign at Maklár-Baglyashalom in 2021, that took aim at the central tell part of the site, its enclosure(s) and (house) anomalies in the outer part of the settlement. The location of the future tell of Baglyashalom was first occupied some time around 2000 BC, starting from a plot distinctly smaller than the current mound which developed in its place over the next 400 years. Most…
The connecting river. Diachronic assessment of fords crossing the Tisza river
The Lendület BASES project offers a unique opportunity for diachronic analysis, enabling changes in landscape, land use, and communication systems to be examined on the basis of archaeological and written evidence from widely separated periods – in this case, the Middle Bronze Age and the Middle Ages. In this article, we investigate the fords of the River Tisza, a key determinant of transport in the Carpathian Basin. Our comparative analysis iden…
Technological comparison of Middle Bronze Age Late Hatvan and Füzesabony pottery
Technological comparison of Early and Middle Bronze Age Hatvan/Late Hatvan and Füzesabony pottery. • Late Hatvan and Füzesabony table wares suggest highly skilled pottery producers. • No differences in raw material choice and tempering were detected between the Late Hatvan and Füzesabony style pottery. • Late Hatvan and Füzesabony ceramics from northeastern Hungary differs in grog tempering from other EBA/MBA pottery styles of the Carpathian Basi…
The Hunyadihalom culture’s site at Gelej-Huszty-Arkay-dűlő
The paper presents the study of the finds and features uncovered at the Middle Copper Age (MCA) site of Gelej-Huszty-Arkay-dűlő in 1994. The site yielded characteristic material of the Hunyadihalom culture, and the structure of this low-intensity, hamlet-like settlement consisting of only a few pits matches what was recorded on most sites of the culture. The study includes the typological and functional analysis of 4,128 pottery fragments, the te…
Reconstructing two buildings and architectural decorations on the Bronze Age Tell of Borsodivánka-Nagyhalom (Northeastern Hungary)
The present study describes and reconstructs the architecture of Bronze Age Houses G and H from Borsodivánka-Marhajárás-Nagyhalom, Northeastern Hungary. The site was investigated in the frame of the Borsod Region Bronze Age Settlement (BORBAS) project. Beyond the information on these two buildings derived from the excavation, we will also incorporate the results of scientific studies, micromorphology and phytoliths analysis conducted on the archi…
Architectural techniques in the Bronze Age tell settlement of Bakonszeg-Kádárdomb
In the Bronze Age Ottományi/Otomani tell-type settlements, we can examine the building solutions of several centuries. In my paper, I would like to review the buildings excavated in the Bronze Age tell-type settlement of Bakonszeg-Kádárdomb, based on the different solutions used in their construction. My work is based on the drawings and diaries of an excavation carried out by Márta Sz. Máthé in 1974. Despite the small size of the 5 × 5 m trench,…
Non-destructive investigations at Neolithic tell-centered settlement complexes on the Great Hungarian Plain
In Southeast Europe, recent years have witnessed a notable shift in scholarly focus related to prehistoric tell sites, expanding to encompass both their immediate surroundings and broader contexts. This shift has coincided with, and to a large extent has been generated by, significant methodological advancements in an array of non-invasive methods, including particularly magnetic prospection. This paper presents the methodology and results of an …
New radiocarbon dates from the Bronze Age Tiszafüred-Majoroshalom site (Eastern Hungary)
In this paper we present new AMS radiocarbon dates from the Bronze Age cemetery of Tiszafüred-Majoroshalom excavated between 1961 and 1972. The cemetery provides crucial information on the cultural development and chronology of the Bronze Age Otomani-Füzesabony and the Tumulus cultures of Eastern Central Europe, in addition to the transition between the Middle and Late Bronze Age (approx. 1500 BC) in the Great Hungarian Plain
Construction materials and building techniques - Comparing anthropogenic sediments of three Middle Bronze Age sites from Hungary
This paper compares various 'earthen' construction materials and building techniques from three Middle Bronze Age tell (multi-layered settlement) sites in Hungary: Százhalombatta-Földvár, Kakucs-Turján (Vatya material culture) and Borsodivánka-Marhajárás-Nagyhalom (Otomani-Füzesabony Cultural Circle (OFCC)). It employs microscopic analyses - archaeological soil micromorphology and phytolith analysis within thin sections - to examine floor, wall a…
Baltic Amber in Hungarian Bronze Age. New data and current stage of research
Amber was one of the key raw materials distributed in Bronze Age Europe. One of its varieties – succinite – wasexchanged over a vast area stretching from its sources on the southern shores of the Baltic Sea to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The chemical identification of Baltic amber significantly expands our knowledge of the dynamics and nature of the relationships connecting different regions of Europe in the first half of the second mill…

A feltárt épületrész a rendelkezésre álló adatok alapján párhuzam nélküli a Kárpát-medencei bronzkor-…
Learn from the charred logs of your neighbour’s house
Excavations have been carried out on the Bronze Age tell settlement at Borsodivánka-Marhajárás-Nagyhalom since 2015. During the 2022 campaign, part of a burnt-down building was unearthed. The architectural remains, preserved by fire, let us observe and record details that allowed a partial reconstruction of the one-time house’s internal structure and wall decorations. Based on the available data, the building unearthed at Borsodivánka has current…
Methods and Opportunities in the Research of Bronze Age Communities
Although there is no textual evidence known from the Bronze Age, written sources describing migrations of later (i.e. Early Medieval) periods effecting the Carpathian Basin were interpreted as instances of cultural and population change which could be comparable with processes that took place during the Bronze Age in the Carpathian Basin. In the past two decades, Eurasian archaeological research received a new impetus to investigate the traces of…
Módszerek és lehetőségek a bronzkori közösségek kutatásában
Bár írásos emlékeket nem ismerünk a bronzkor időszakából, a Kárpát-medencét érintő későbbi (pl. kora középkori) népvándorlásokra vonatkozó források ismeretében gyakran a bronzkor változásait is új népek betelepüléséhez, kisebb-nagyobb migrációkhoz kötötte a régészeti kutatás. Az utóbbi két évtizedben újra előtérbe került a történelem előtti időkben feltételezhető eurázsiai vándorlások nyomainak azonosítása, a kutatásba immár más tudományágak, töb…
Results of a systematic survey programme on the Hatvan sites of Emőd-Nagyhalom and Tard-Tatárdomb in Northern Hungary
In this paper we want to present some results of an intensive survey programme on the Bronze Age settlements of Emőd-Nagyhalom and Tard-Tatárdomb in Northern Hungary. The inner cores of these multi-layer sites are just one part of a more complex whole. They are surrounded by an outer settlement that is separated by a deep and wide ditch from the inner tell part. The outer settlement itself can be divided in two parts: There is an intensively used…
Előzetes jelentés Hernádbűd-Várdomb bronzkori településének kutatásáról
Hernádbűd-Várdomb területén 2007-2008-ban geodéziai felméréssel, intenzív felszíni leletgyűjtéssel, régészeti célú légifényképek és geofizikai felmérés segítségével kísérletet tettünk a település szerkezeti rekonstrukciójára. A rekonstrukciómellett elvégeztük az összegyűjtött leletanyag régészeti és környezettörténeti értékelését is
