Bathing in wine and olive oil
This article presents a recently discovered multipurpose agricultural processing facility constructed within the Small Bath at Antiochia ad Cragum in Türkiye. We argue that the Bath was transformed for the production of wine and olive oil in Late Antiquity, representing the best-preserved and largest-capacity agricultural facility recorded at this urban site. The remarkable discovery of in situ processing equipment continues to develop our unders…
Can Incorporating Parity Information Improve the Reliability of Completed Cohort Fertility Projections? Insights From a Bayesian Generalized Additive Model Approach
Fertility projections inform population projections and are used to plan for the future provision of vital services such as maternity care and schooling. Existing fertility forecasting models tend to use aggregate births data indexed by age and time alone, thereby neglecting to include information about parity, that is, the number of previous live-born children. This omission risks ignoring a crucial mechanism of fertility dynamics. We propose a …
The Archaeology of Olive Oil Production in Roman and Pre-Roman Italy
This article provides a comprehensive synthesis and re-evaluation of the archaeological evidence for olive cultivation and oil production across Italy from prehistory through the Roman era. Italy is often neglected in studies of ancient olives and oil, with greater focus given to the eastern Mediterranean or Gaul, Spain, and North Africa. Extant studies on Italian regions fail to capture broader patterns and transregional developments. Scientific…
Probabilistic projections of distributions of kin over the life course
BACKGROUNDMathematical kinship demography is an expanding area of research.Recent papers have explored the expected number of kin a typical individual should experience.Despite the uncertainty of the future number and distributions of kin, just one paper investigates it. OBJECTIVEWe aim to develop a new method for obtaining the probability that a typical population member experiences one or more of some kin at any age through the life course. MET…

The ‘Place’ of Urban Wineries and Oileries in the Greek and Roman World
This paper is the first comprehensive Mediterranean-wide analysis of urban Greek and Roman wine and oil production sites. By using diverse examples from a range of periods we reassess the ‘place’ of urban viniculture and oleiculture against traditional explanations of ‘ruralization’, insecurity in the countryside, and urban contraction. New insight into how people engaged with urban spaces is developed through a combination of macro-level analysi…

The Falerii Novi Project
The Falerii Novi Project represents a newly formed archaeological initiative to explore the Roman city of Falerii Novi. The project forms a collaboration of the British School at Rome with a multinational team of partner institutions. Thanks to a rich legacy of geophysical work on both the site and its territory, Falerii Novi presents an exceptional opportunity to advance understanding of urbanism in ancient and medieval Italy. The Falerii Novi P…
The Falerii Novi Project
A four-week campaign from 29 May–23 June 2023 marked the third season of the Falerii Novi Project, and the second season of stratigraphic excavation on site as part of an international collaboration between the British School at Rome, Harvard University, the Institute of Classical Studies (University of London) and the University of Toronto, along with researchers from Ghent University and the University of Florence, under the authorization of th…
The spectacle of production
The elites of many past cultures have sought to romanticise agricultural labour-often the source of their wealth and hence their status. A recently discovered winery at the Villa of the Quintilii on the Via Appia Antica, near Rome, provides only the second known example from the Graeco-Roman world of an opulent wine production complex built to facilitate vinicultural 'spectacle'. The authors present the architectural and decorative form of the wi…

The Archaeology of Wine Production in Roman and Pre-Roman Italy
The world of vinicultural archaeology has expanded exponentially over the past two decades, adding novel discoveries, methodologies, theories, and new archaeological evidence. Despite this, focused regional or site-specific approaches and syntheses dominate scholarship. This article provides an alternate, macroperspective via a comprehensive update and overview of the archaeological evidence for the entire Italian peninsula. When considered as a …
Investigating the application of generalized additive models to discrete-time event history analysis for birth events
Discrete-time event history analysis (EHA) is the standard approach taken when modelling fertility histories collected in surveys, where the date of birth is often recorded imprecisely. This method is commonly used to investigate the factors associated wit
Making the invisible, visible
The U@Uni Academy provides a case study of a composite preparation and access programme, integrating key elements of widening participation, alternate entry and enabling schemes. It is offered to students from a low socioeconomic background andfocuses on non-traditional indicators of attainment in order to prepare for, access and successfully transition from secondary school to higher education. This article outlines the methodological and theore…
Late Roman viticulture in Rough Cilicia
Rough Cilicia is well-known for the number of wine-presses found, 1 which shows that viticulture was important locally as well as wine being a likely candidate for export. 2 Excavation and survey here has generally lagged behind other regions, 3 and work at Antiochia ad Cragum (Güney Köyü, Gazipaşa) in particular is relatively recent, starting with the Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project (RCSP) and continuing with its offshoot, the Antioc…
