Education and Society in Florentine Tuscany
Giovanni Villani, in an often quoted passage of his Cronica, mentioned the approximate number of students in Florence who, in the 1330s, were enrolled in various kinds of schools. Historians have often returned to his numbers, pondering their trustworthiness, and the cultural consequences of his description. Following a series of more or less plausible extrapolations, Paul Grendler suggested that ‘Florence had a male schooling rate of 67 to 83 pe…
Finding Europe
Finding Europe
In the last decade or so, many books have been devoted to the history of Europe. Two conceptual axes predominate in a large number of these accounts: a discourse focusing on Europe’s values, and another discourse, fashioned largely in opposition to the first, which emphasizes the process of European “construction.” The first conceives of Europe’s past teleologically, as a process by which certain values (Christian ethics, individualism, capitalism…

Marriage Alliance in Late Medieval Florence
How did propertied families in late medieval and early modern Florence maintain their power and affluence while equally important clans elsewhere were fatally undermined by the growth of commerce and personal freedom, and the consequences of the Plague? Drawing on a vast array of archival research - from letters and memoirs to fiscal declarations to records of the Dowry Fund, Anthony Molho suggests that the answer is found in the twin institution…

Epidemics in Renaissance Florence
Epidemics and mortality in 15th and 16th century Florence, Italy, were investigated by use of records of the government-sponsored Dowry Fund. These records contain the date of birth, date of investment, and date of dowry payment or death of 19,000 girls and women. Major epidemics ("plagues") occurred repeatedly.
