  • All Eyes on Me

Mats B Küssner, Edith Van Dyck et al.•ARTICLE•Music Perception An Interdisciplina…•2020

Duo musicians exhibit a broad variety of bodily gestures, but it is unclear how soloists’ and accompanists’ movements differ and to what extent they attract observers’ visual attention. In Experiment 1, seven musical duos’ body movements were tracked while they performed two pieces in two different conditions. In a congruent condition, soloist and accompanist behaved according to their expected musical roles; in an incongruent condition, the solo…

  • Exploring the effect of tempo changes on violinists’ body movements

Open Access•Esther Coorevits, Dirk Moelants et al.•ARTICLE•Musicae Scientiae•2019

In expressive music performance, tempo is known to be a fundamental parameter. In this article, we explored effects of changes in musical tempo on performers’ movement articulations. Eight duos (piano – violin) played two pieces at a predefined tempo, after which this start tempo was gradually increased and decreased. Throughout the different performances, we measured acceleration of the violinists’ head and right wrist, together with the downwar…

  • Using Narrative Analysis to Map the Control Parameters of Enhanced Operatic Singing

Katty Kochman, Pieter Coussement et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2012

The concepts of mediality and embodied music cognition are relevant theories to improve the efficiency of the design of technologically enhanced performance environments. This paper discusses (i) relevant theories that may be applicable for the analysis of gestures in professional operatic singing performances, and (ii) the resulting gestural mappings that might then be used for building a vocal augmentation tool. A methodology is presented integ…

  • The Influence of an Audience on Performers

Dirk Moelants, Michiel Demey et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2012•Citada por: 1•Referências: 14

For many people, live concerts occupy an important position in their experience of music. The interaction between audience and performers creates a special tension, which also influences the performing musicians. This paper presents a method to study how the presence of an audience influences performers. To study this influence, a concert with a singer and a viola da gamba player was recorded using audio, video and acceleration sensors (invisibly…

  • Evaluation of Audio Beat Tracking and Music Tempo Extraction Algorithms

Martin F McKinney, Dirk Moelants et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2007•Citada por: 6•Referências: 22

This is an extended analysis of eight different algorithms for musical tempo extraction and beat tracking. The algorithms participated in the 2006 Music Information Retrieval Evaluation eXchange (MIREX), where they were evaluated using a set of 140 musical excerpts, each with beats annotated by 40 different listeners. Performance metrics were constructed to measure the algorithms' abilities to predict the most perceptually salient musical beats a…

  • Perception and performance of aksak metres

    Open Access•Dirk Moelants•ARTICLE•Musicae Scientiae•2006

In this paper different aspects of the fast odd metres found in the Balkan ( aksak) are studied. Comparing their temporal characteristics with thresholds of rhythm perception, it is shown that the basic regular unit is too fast to serve as the pulse. Thus the pulse moves to the (unequal) units of 2, 3 or 4 beats. This gives aksak metres a special position within an overall typology of asymmetric metre. Two sets of data will be analysed to give mo…

  • Prediction of Musical Affect Using a Combination of Acoustic Structural Cues

Marc Leman, Valery Vermeulen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2005•Citada por: 4•Referências: 41

This study explores whether musical affect attribution can be predicted by a linear combination of acoustical structural cues. To that aim, a database of sixty musical audio excerpts was compiled and analyzed at three levels: judgments of affective content by subjects; judgments of structural content by musicological experts (i.e., "manual structural cues"), and extraction of structural content by an auditory-based computer algorithm (called: aco…

  • Statistical Analysis of Written and Performed Music. A Study of Compositional Principles and Problems of Coordination and Expression in ?Punctual? Serial Music

Dirk Moelants•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2000

In this paper statistical techniques like correlation and analysis of variance are applied to the analysis of musical scores and performances. As an illustration of the possibilities of these techniques in music analysis, one of the first examples of rationally constructed punctual serial music, Karel Goeyvaerts’ “No. 1” was analyzed. This led to interesting new insights in the construction of the score. In addition, three expert performances of …

  • Resonance in the Perception of Musical Pulse

Leon Van Noorden, Dirk Moelants•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•1999•Citada por: 8

A number of phenomena related to the perception of isochronous tone sequences peak at a certain rate (or tempo) and taper off at both slower and faster rates. In the present paper we start from the hypothesis that the peaking finds its origin in the presence of a damped resonating oscillator in the perceptual-motor system. We assume that for pulse perception only the ‘effective’ resonance curve matters, i.e., the enhancement of the amplitude of t…
